Non-Rev Tips/Tricks

I was on the ATL one, most likely use it again this week. Open but still 20+ non-revs on it last time I used it.

Last time I tried the ATL one it was oversold with 30+ nonrevs. Ended up having to take US to CLT than go CLTATL on DL. Luckily between US and DL there is a flight every 30 mins to an hour between CLTATL.

A quick anecdote to reinforce some of the points already made.

My parents were trying to non-rev to Las Vegas on a busy weekend. Almost all of the flight were oversold coming out of CLT, and they were at least 12-14 down the list to get on the first flight of the morning. My dad is the ultimate nice guy/schmoozer, and everyone loves him. He and the gate agent became fast friends. Anyways, the plane started to push and my parents were not on the airplane. They were still in the chairs and were waiting to walk to the next gate to try again, and the rest of the non-revs left the gate area. A few minutes later, the gate agent came and got them from the seats and said that they could get on if they really hurried. Evidently there were some really drunk girls on the airplane as part of a bachelorette party on their way to Vegas. As soon as the airplane started pushing back, they started screaming/celebrating and popped open bottles of alcohol that they had. The flight attendant called the captain, they stopped the push and pulled back to the gate. All of the girls got thrown off, and they let my parents get on.
Nice...that's a Non-Rev win!

An anecdote of my own from the other side of the coin. Back in Feb when EWR was about to get hit with the "worst snow storm in the history of the universe" I was stuck there on an overnight when all my stuff cancelled. I high tailed it to the airport to get out on the first flight back west before the "snow" hit. The first flight out when I got there was going to STL. So it was going to be a three leg EWR - STL - DFW - OKC. I make i to DFW just fine but a flight earlier in the day to OKC cancelled which backed up all the remaining flights. The penultimate flight left and there was a huge stand by list and a jumpseater who I knew had priority.

So I broke the rule...I left the gate. Found a place to camp out for about 3 hours till the last flight left. Went to go make sure I was still listed and the gate agent told me I wasn't because I didn't show up when my name was called for a seat on the last flight. I don't know what happened, or how I could have gotten on, but I didn't. And as a result of not waiting I got home about 4 hours later.

*queue Price is Right loser music.

You can, but it's one of the more poor decisions you could make in life.

The reason I ask is because I'm leaving for airline training shortly, which is 8 weeks, and they said they can give me a "space available" flight there. I'm not sure I can pack for 8 weeks in a carry-on :/ I have no experience with nonrev travel.

!? That's BS if you're going to or from training they should give you a must ride, or positive space ticket.

If they actually make employees fly standby then I guess you can check a bag and if you don't make your flight you can get it from the luggage office later.

What airline are you going to start training for, because even the bottom feeders (I should know I work at one) will give you positive space to and from training events.

Are you sure it's space "A" and not positive space? I got the two mixed up at first as well.

Yeah you become an expert in only having a carry-on with 5 days of clothes and a headset.

And plenty of quarters for the laundry

Hell, that's me at my current job. Usually about half way through a rotation I'm thinking "I hope this doesn't become a 3 weeker because this hotel doesn't have laundry and I'm starting to smell homeless."

My hiring letter (for QX) specifically says space available. But they said the same thing for the interview, which turned out to be positive spaced. I'm planning for the worst case scenario.

If you really want an adventure, pack a carry-on bag with three or four days worth of essentials and head to the airport. Look at the departure board and pick a destination. Go to the ticket counter and/or gate and politely ask the agent if there are any seats available on that flight. If there are, get on. If not, pick another destination and try the same thing. Spend some time in your mystery city and then do the same thing in a day or two, eventually working your way back home. It would be a fun way to spend a few days and I guarantee you would have stories to share when you got back home.

Yes, unless you accidentally end up in KJMS or KDVL...I'm just guessing admittedly but I seriously doubt there is much going on there...
