No Instrument Rating

I guess i should have emphasized "as SIC" more...obviously flying jets as PIC without an IR would be stupid.
as SIC if you get into instrument conditions, can you still be a SIC?

if it's Part 91, you probably aren't even a required crewmember so maybe yes but then you can't really log... but I highly doubt it's legal in 135 world

With very few exceptions, jets operated under Part 91 still legally require an SIC. A G-V most certainly.

well then cross what I said and let's go ahead and say no IR = no jets. I have yet to meet somebody who flies jets who can say they operate VFR. (by that I mean never getting into IMC, I have met some who do not file unless they need to)

Thanks guys...he does have an ATP so that explains it...IR is assumed if you have ATP...I thought they would have a listing of all certifications. Much appreciated.

yeah I don't update my profile as much as I should...I live in PHX now. Are you in Florida? How's the flying out that way? I had some Class B experience out in Hawaii but SoCal was quite an eye opener...alot of fun though:)

No. An SIC without an IR can only be SIC under VFR. Perhaps the confusion is that the type rating isn't required in the US to be SIC, just category/class and IR. The "VFR Only" SIC rating primarily exists to be compliant with the ICAO when operating outside of the US.

Thanks to the gentlemen that displayed constructive responses to my question and for refraining at taking shots at me...to the guys with snide remarks...no comment, i just may get banned permanently for my remarks. It is obvious these guys didn't understand the question and were too quick to shoot off in an attempt to be amusing. FYI this is not a question im asking for myself...looked up an old friend on faa.gov airmen certificate...he is type rated in the previously mentioned aircraft, has all his certs with the exception of an instrument rating, did not see it anywhere on the query page.

Okay...the snideness of my comment lies in that the minimum requirement to enter Class A airspace (unless you're really quite special) is an IFR clearance, and both pilots need to be instrument-rated crewmembers, even if there isn't a single cloud in the sky the whole way. :)

Remember, there are two different sources of required crew member regulations. For just about anything as complicated as the G-IV, the minimum requirements even without a single cloud in the sky (as specified by the aircraft's type certification) is two pilots with appropriate category and class ratings, (and instrument ratings if the flight is to be operated under IFR), even before you get to whichever rules the aircraft is operated under.

Also, since type ratings are flown to ATP standards, the ATP rating is often done simultaneously with the Type.

Or so I've been told

That's great! I just went all the way to California last week in a 172 and I stopped by in deer valley both times, very cool place to fly. lots of desert and not a lot of traffic/people which is a nice change of pace from down here!

socal is pretty active airspace, they are a ton nicer than the miami controllers though and that really helps. But the intricacies that Miami airspace can seem are nothing compared to socal, especially because they have terrain and a hell of a lot more charlies around the bravo and the haze is unbelievable. we get bad visibility here sometimes, but over there it can be downright dumb visibility

I guess the flying here is very predictable, if it's a good day (except summer) it'll be a good day all day. Over there it can be sunny in the morning and ovc002 an hour later thanks to those mountains.

I really don't give a north end of a southbound rat what you have. I just made a statement based on the question you asked. Next time take the knot outta your tighty whities before you go online. Peace out.

since you assumed i didn't have one...I just had to let your ignorant self know. if hiding behind your computer and spewing garbage is what it takes to boost your self esteem...have at it.

I don't mean to sound harsh, BUT good luck getting a banner tow job without an instrument rating...

I have one...thanks:crazy:
Seems like an assumption to me. Did TwoTwoLeft say anything regarding whether or not you had an Instrument Rating? I didn't see anything....

Looks like you would do well to take your own advice. :D

You know, call me insane (you most likely wouldn't be too far off with that accusation), but it seems as though you're the one that's doing the assuming, here. Of course, TwoTwoLeft didn't help with that underwear comment, now you're not helping things by calling them ignorant.

Ah, kids these days.... :)

Ah, gotcha. Probably not a good idea to be on here, then. :D

Yeah, your right. Look at his previous posts, on other threads...it will give you a clear picture of the kind of person were dealing with here. Other than that...lots of cool people on this forum...yesterday was a fluke.
