No food or drinks on Delta flights?

I'm hearing that there is a dispute between Delta and Gate Gourmet and as a result the vast majority of the afternoon and evening Delta flights had to take off without any catered food or drinks. (we're not just talking meals, we're talking soda and water too) I can only imagine what it'd be like to get on that 14-hour flight to Narita from Atlanta to be told there is no food or beverages on the plane.

See the release on Delta's website here.

Scroll down to reply #39 to see the e-mail that Delta sent out to employees regarding the situation here.

They need catering by Chick-Fil-A....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Happened in SLC last week too. Heard they sent someone to Sam's Club with a dump truck, formed an assembly line, and tried to put their own meals together. Not sure what was going on, I think SkyChef supplies DAL in SLC.

Cost cutting?

On a related note, is America West still selling bag lunches/dinners? Any idea how that's going, anyone?

Apparently, the airline is having a squabble with "Gate Gourmet" -- which I'm still trying to figure out if Gate Gourmet meant "Gor-may" or "Gor-Met"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(insert standard waiver of liability here)

Yep, they are selling their lunches. I am flying AW ot to Vegas and on the tickets it said, meals for sale. Dont' plan on buying any, I'll hit up some food in the terminal in MSP before hand. I'll let you know how the flight goes.

Some of the food for sale stuff on the airlines is pretty tasty. Some isn't, but some is. It's actually turned out to be a fairly suprising profit center for the airlines.

Mainly because McD's in the airport is hella expensive. Either that or people are scared to bring food on the plane. People! It's not a movie theater. Not that I've EVER smuggled food into a movie theater......

Mr. Ashcroft, we have another threat-to-national-security criminal here....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For airport food, I've gotta have that Whitt's pork sandwich in BNA.

Holy cow. It's crack on a bun.

I'm sure they've had my name for a couple of years now. All those German history books and military strategy books I checked out from the library, I'm surprised I'm not in Gitmo already.

Have to try that on Fri......

Oh man, now I'm hungry!

I love smoked meats -- I was a big fan of the airport Dickeys at DFW and even the BBQ joint in AUS -- Harlons? I can eat BBQ 24/7.

Ahh yes. I did a whole month of Memphis layovers. Hit the hotel, Huey's for a "beverage", then down to (can't remember the name) for a dry rub slab o'swine, then walk across the street to the stadium for a Redbirds game.

Heaven.

Now, Doug, imagine living here.....

It's horrible. 15 pounds in two years. I'm slowly reversing it, but it's horrible.

Next time, your sandwich is on me, though.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, I suppose this is relevant.

I'll post a few snips. You guys will have to pay the Journal if you want more.

Amid Airline Woes, In-Flight Caterers Rewrite Cookbook

These days, the airline-food business is worrying less about food and more about business. Struggling airlines have cut all kinds of services once seen as fundamental to the onboard experience, including the infamous meal. In order to survive, this $12 billion industry has thrown out cooking methods redolent of a low-end dining hall and introduced exacting procedures that wouldn't be out of place in a semiconductor factory.

In some cases, Gate Gourmet has quit actually making food, preferring to buy it from restaurant chains or other kitchens. The company is also having to dream up new ways to sell food directly to passengers as well as improve first-class offerings on a limited budget. Eventually, Gate Gourmet's management wants to offer an array of onboard services -- such as providing pillows and magazines -- that have nothing to do with food.

[/ QUOTE ] But the meals on the plane are just as much, $7 for a sandwich or salad, and $2 more if you want the mini stack of Pringles. No sides or anything, that's all you get for $7. At least at MCD's the $7 will get you a burger and some fries. The reason I bought the meals on the planes is because it was way too difficult to get a toddler to the food court w/ all our stuff, and back to the plane before loading time. But on the way back we stopped at Subway before the airport, and stuffed the diaper bag full of sandwichs and chips and cookies.
