Night Flying Hours

I have a very interesting query about fulfilling ATP flying hours requirement. :)

Refer to §61.159 (a)(2): 100 hours of night flight time.

And §61.159 (b): A person who has performed at least 20 night takeoffs and landings to a full stop may substitute each additional night takeoff and landing to a full stop for 1 hour of night flight time to satisfy the requirements of paragraph (a)(2) of this section; however, not more than 25 hours of night flight time may be credited in this manner.

Here is my tricky query about logging night flying hours. Let say, I have done 50 hours of "Touch-&-Go" (no complete stop) at night in the same circuit, can this be counted as night flying hours?

The 50 hours you spent flying in the dark would count, whether you were doing touch and goes or just flying in circles around a well lit pool party.

The touch and goes themselves, however, couldn't be used to reduce the total required night time.

I have done hours of night cross country and flying activities at night.

It looks like I am fall short of night flying hours.

However, I have many students wanted to do night touch-and-go only. Not sure whether am I able to add up these "touch-and-go" as night flying hours.

If they were stop and go's then they would count towards the one hour per pattern circuit allowance.

This.

why should the student want to do only night touch and goes - why should they have that choice?

I did mine (t&gs) dual for private and solo for commercial. To build up any more night time, I'll do full stops.

Alex.

I knew somebody will going to ask this question. I hate to answer.

To cut it short. Foreign students are required to do instructional "Touch-&-Go" (no full stop landing) at night to fulfill their own country's aviation authority requirement.

Does this answer you?.

As an instructor, can he log the hours as night flying?

I already said, it is not stop and go.

It is continous "touch and go" at night. Please read the first post carefully.

Well, by definition, the last night landing you did would be to a full stop, even if there were a number of touch and go landings that preceded the last one. So add up the number of days that you logged a night landing, where the takeoff was also at night, and you have (a minimum) of one full stop for each day where a night landing was logged.

If that number is less than 25, well, how long does it take to do 10 or 20 night landings to a full stop by yourself? Maybe an hour or two?

I guess what I was trying to hint at was you could grab a plane and do two hours of stop and go's at night and knock out 15 or 20 circuits instead of renting or instructing for 15-20 hours to accomplish the same thing.

Sorry. I would like to make it clear again.

I have done hours of night cross country and flying activities at night. Plus, I have already fulfilled §61.159 (b) [achieved maximum 25 hours of night flight time]

And I am still fall short of 50 hours of night flight time to fulfill §61.159 (a)(2).

My question is, can the next 50 hours of "Touch-&-Go" at night in the same circuit, be counted as night flying hours?

*Please note: There is a difference between a complete stop and non-stop. I am raising this query because it is "Touch-&-Go" night flying activities (with no complete stop).

How do you have 500 night takeoffs and landings to a full stop but only have 25 hours total night time? (Assuming 25 hours of night and using the exception of §61.159(b) and crediting the maximum number of night landings toward the total night time requirements making for a credited 50 hours of night time leaving you 50 hours short.)

Is your total night time greater than 100 hours? Congratulations, you meet the requirements of §61.159(a)(2).

Is your total night time equal to or greater than 75 hours and you have performed 45 takeoffs and landings at night? Congratulations, you meet the exception of §61.159(b) and you meet the requirements of §61.159(a)(2).

If you have 100 hours or more of night time it doesn't matter what you were doing, touch and goes, full stops, climbing to your plane's service ceiling turning off the lights and looking for UFOs, etc. If you have less than 100 hours night time, and you have more than 20 takeoffs and landings to a full stop, you can credit up to 25 additional landings (night landings - 20 = 1 hour credit of night time with max of 25) towards the night time requirement so if you have 75 hours of night and 45 landings you would qualify for an ATP rating.

I have edited. I am sorry. That was a typo-error.

"No" to both.

I have <100hours of night time.

Can the next 50 hours logged in "Touch and Go" within a circuit at night be counted towards night flying?

Thank you.
