Wow, did a super short run yesterday and got one heck of a tip. S. Florida to Nassau, sit 7 hours and back to S. Florida. This was the first time I've had this long of a sit - and it sucked. But after returning the party back to the originating airport, the principle in the group (a celebrity) gave us a $2,500 tip. Not to bad - $833 per crew member. I almost felt bad and certainately don't expect anything. Was nice though.

What is the experience of you other 135 guys out there? Our company policy basically says if offered, it's best to accept instead of offending a customer. Still felt kind of weird. Is this the "norm" type of policy in this side of the industry?

As far as who we flew, that I can't say.

I have never flown pax, but people I know have told me they get tips pretty often. That's the first $2500 one I've heard of... you guys must have done good work!
 
I got a $700 tip from a group of car dealers I flew to Cabo once.

Most customers who tip usually give $100 or $200, though.

Haha... yeah, me too :D

At the airport I worked at a couple of summers ago, they had the prince of some Arabic country come in with two planes--the first with all the people, and the second with all the horses. Anyways, they three guys working line that day got a $1500 tip to split. Not bad for fueling two planes...

That's the biggest I've heard of, but doesn't surprise me. We just received $600 split between two people, and I'd say I average a couple hundred a month extra in tips, so yes it does happen fairly regularly for us.

I'll update the blog here in a few minutes to let everybody know where I'm at...or should I do a guess the airport:panic::bandit:...
 
The few charters I've worked tipped. Nothing like that, but we were trucking people around in a Seneca:)
 
I've been averaging over $100 a week in tips working the line in BHB this summer. Plus all the leftover catering for free. The biggest I've gotten was 50 bucks for taking ice, coffee and catering out to a G550. Its been crazy busy though. We broke our single day Jet-a record on Sunday the 12th. 11,209 gallons.

Damn, bringing out the coffee/ice/etc to the airplane is considered part of my job so I never get a tip. But the leftover catering is indeed great.
 
I got $20 today.

It was after hours and a wealthy prospect who flies an R-44 comes in. First the introduces himself and says hes from XXX airport just North.

Me: "Oh cool, I was thinking about looking for a line postion there."

Him: "I think they might have just hired someone, as a lady had to leave. (takes out his cell phone) Let me check, I know the manager."

Me: "oh, thats OK, I don't know if its worth the drive." :banghead: x1,000

Him: "sure?"

Me: "yeah, thats fine." :banghead: x1,000

I have got no idea why I just didn't get my name with him in the first place....
But all did after was turn on the A/C and unlock the door to the classroom so he could be in private with his client. 20 mins later he walks out, I lock up, turn around and he hands me a $20. I THEN gave him my phone number and he said he'll check for next summer. :o

I haven't expected to be tipped, so I guess I'm still waiting for that first one. Maybe the next time the pax are giving out tips to the rampers I'll stand in line and see if I can get a few bucks.

The CA I fly with is routinely tipping line and FBO people. Is that common practice for the corp/charter world? He does claim it on the trip sheet so the cost really goes back to the customer.

It was a Part 91 G550. On 91 flights the crews tend to do the tipping instead of the pax. The pax didn't tip on that one.

I been keeping track of my tips for IRS income purposes ;) and I might break $1000 for this summer in tips alone.
