Next stop...Albuquerque, NM

So, does anybody live in or visited in the past ABQ? It looks like this will be my next stop on this US tour, starting after this weekend, more than likely.

Can anybody give me the good/bad/ugly about the place? I will be there for approximately 3 weeks, or so.

Where to go?
What to do with my time?
Economical hotels that are decent?
Rental cars?
Any other information that would help would be appreciated.

Yes, I am aware of the high altitude flying and have done some mountain flying. I don't know what airport I'll be basing out of yet, but probably Double Eagle, from what I've seen so far.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Sorry, don't know anything about Albuquerque (sheesh, thats a tough one to spell this morning...).

I went to high school in ABQ. If you like the outdoors, it's a great place. Can't give you too much solid information, though. It's been a long time since I've been there. I think they redid Double Eagle a few years back. It's a cool little airport out on the west mesa sitting next to three volcanic cones.

Oh. And watch out for balloons! They're everywhere in the mornings!

Yes, I'm finally getting around some. One of our pilots (he started the week before me) has been here in DFW, Forsythe, GA, some where in Louisiana, and is now in DC. So I am ready to see new places. Supposedly, the plan is to be in ABQ for about 3 weeks, then go through Illinois, eventually back in Rochester, NY. That's the plan right now...we'll see what happens.

From what I have read, Double Eagle is a nice place. I don't know where we are basing out of, but I'll keep ya'll informed.

Mike, are you going to be anywhere near the area, or are you allowed to say? Don't worry, I won't be in your way as it's all day VFR flying we do.

Marshall, how's the 'Van treating you? It took me a few times to figure out how to spell it and it is a pain, so I've just been typing ABQ.

JD, thanks for the info. Trust me, I know how it feels to not be familiar with an area you grew up in. I am going through it here in DFW. I've had a good time here, but it's time to no longer deal with DFW!! Class Charlie, here we come!

I visited Albuquerque for the first time last weekend. My friend and I walked to the Petroglyph National Park which is northwest of the city. That was interesting, lots of old writing on the rocks. I'm unable to give you advice in any of the other areas unfortunately. We couldn't rent a car because we're not 21 yet. We ended up walking fifteen miles on Saturday! It was a very nice day and I didn't mind it at all.

Edit: We did stay at a hotel but paid the crew rate at the Doubletree downtown so that doesn't really help you out other than the fact that it would NOT be a cheap place to stay for the normal price!

Double Eagle seems like a nice enough airport. I flew in to there about 2 weeks ago. The FBO (there are two) lent us a crew car to go get dinner. The only complaint is that it is a LONG drive from the main road. The airport its self was pretty good. Two nice looking runways and an ILS. Any body know what it is called Double Eagle II? What happened to the first one?

I want to say that during the renovation, they actually moved it a little bit south. Not sure why that idea is in my head. There used to be another GA airport on the north side of the city, but it was on Native American ground, and they closed it to put up a casino.

Re: Now leaving...ABQ; KC here I come...

Well, I've enjoyed NM and all the beautiful views, but now I am off to Kansas City, KS (not sure of the airport we'll be based out of yet). I don't know how long I'll be there...myself and another pilot are trying to work some magic, since he's in Washington, DC, and he's from KC. But, as of right now, I will leave bright and early tomorrow morning, depending on the T-storms, etc. Get ready KC, here I come!

So, if anybody's in the KC area over the next few days, let me know. I always enjoy meeting JC'ers on my tour of the nation.

Re: Now leaving...ABQ; KC here I come...

As far as hotels go, you ought to check and see if thier are any extended stay suites in Kansas City. Especially if you're going to be thier a month or so. Its basically like having a studio apartment with a maid that comes twice a week. They have full kitchens which will make it a little cheaper to eat and thier only like 215 bucks for the weekly rate. By the way I know I had talked to you a little before about a survey job and wanted to tell you I ended up getting hired by the company. Who knows we may be working in the same area sometime soon.

Tex,

I'm in an Extended Stay here in ABQ right now...definitely worth the money. It only has dial-up is my only complaint. I'll be looking for one in KC.

As of right now, I am planning on flying into FLV (Ft. Leavenworth, KS). They will probably relocate me after that, which will suck trying to get my car again from a different airport.

Congrats on the job. Where are you right now? I was told that KC is going to be a solo job, but you never know.
