Newsweek: who will pilot all those planes?

I don't think anyone has any problems with you. It's really just another day on JC for most of us.

As far as Jtrain goes,

Whenever I debate with him, I usually just take him outside and rough him up a bit. j/k He's really a cool cat. :)

It's because I'm black isn't it.

You forgot: Brand new ahole captain who all the F/Os put on their no-fly list until no one will fly with him and he gets fired.

Or: Brand new ahole Captain who gets massive Pro Stan complaints until the Company can't afford to ignore him any longer and he gets fired.

There are ways to weed these toads out.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

Cruise....You can't upgrade without the seniority to do so. It's seniority that starts the whole process. You could have the skill but lack the seniority...You just want to act like becoming a captain is some massive accomplishment when it's nothing more then longevity in concert with skills you have no excuse not to have...Talk about an ego maniac...If you don't have the skill set to upgrade once having the seniority to do so you should consider a career in used car sales...

That's right, seniority gives you the 'opportunity' to become a Captain. In no way, shape, or form does it MAKE you a Captain. Which, (need I point out again?) is what you were saying. Now if that isn't what you meant, that's a different story altogether.

RSG.....great, you've been on-the-line for a couple months and you think being a Captain is a snap. That's a typical brand-new FO opinion....but you will learn in time. I am no airline expert and as such, I know enough to listen to those who have gone before me......lots to learn young padawan......and it's easier to do w/ your eyes open and your mouth shut. I only mention this because it would seem you've come to JC and have spouted off your thoughts as though you're a twenty year Legacy Captain. It's wonderful you have an opinion, that's what JC is about. HOWEVER, take some deep breaths and open your mind to those who probably know a bit more than you do about the industry in general.

Furthermore, I won't go so far as to say becoming a Captain is a 'massive' accomplishment......but it is an accomplishment (ego trip not included), nonetheless. One in which, it would seem, you've yet to reach. ;) That's all well and good, in due time, you'll get your shot....thanks to seniority giving you that CHANCE.

Good luck with your career! :)

Yeah? Go tell that to UAL Mgmt that just spent $4 million on OFFICE FURNITURE in HDQ. Gee, your right, we are all just a bunch of stupid pilots that don't understand anything.

. . .Your point? Relate it to something more tangible that we understand the context of the facts you've presented.

Somehow, I've got to believe pilots can develop some system whereby they can weed out those F/Os they believe do not possess the aptitude to become a captain? That's utterly incredulous.

Yep, same for FO's.....called probationary period....annual recurrent PC's......FO's on no-fly lists....etc...

Lot's and lot's of ways to get rid of an FO, same as Captains. Does that mean some don't squeak through the cracks. Of course not. Gonna have the proverbial 'bad apple' on both sides of the cockpit....it happens.

Phew! Thanks.

Actually, where I work, Capts. can't have no-fly lists. For one thing, the Company expects you to suck it up and run the flight deck your way, no matter how much of a horse's patoot the F/O is.

But the technical reason is the way lines are awarded. Captain lines are awarded first. The F/O's no fly list comes in to play during bid awards. If his name should come up on a line occupied by a Captain on the F/O's no-fly list, he automatically defaults to his next line choice.

It behooves you to check who is already on a trip in Open Time BEFORE you pick it up.

Eh, RAH, was upgrading people out of seniority a bit ago...

Hehe, ooops......guess I should have included YMMV with my statement. Obviously, each airline is different in the way schedules are awarded. :o

That's cool; I expect that as well. My point about this policy is that if the company expects you to fly with anyone, safety is a consideration if the F/O adversely affects CRM on the flight deck. CAs should be able to identify those F/O that do that. There should be a merit system combined with senority. Financially, sooner or later, this individual is going to be eligible for upgrade. The merit system can be one prequalifier to limit the potential for a bad F/O to to upgrade.
