Hello, everyone!
Just tossing in an introduction. Like everyone else, I'm chasing the dream of flying for a living. I'm currently a science teacher that finds teaching no longer rewarding, and I'm leaning towards flying. I'm a student pilot with 14 hrs (I know... crazy, huh?) I'm also 46 yrs old. I've tossed the idea around of getting my ratings through ATP, but have some reservations due to what I've read around the WWW. Perhaps getting them at my FBO may be best -but what about time building??

Anywho, that's my story -and I'm sticking to it.... :) I welcome any suggestions...

THanks!

Hi Don!
Welcome to JC.
Lot's of great advice to be gleaned here.
If you haven't already done so I highly recomend pouring through the changing careers section of the forum lots of good info there that's relevant to your situation.

Don welcome to JC. I was a 40 y/o career changer. Now stuck in a rut like everyone else. It is aggravating sometimes, but I'm still excited about the change, and look forward to better days! As for suggestions on the ATP or FBO thing...oh geez better get me some  and a coke...:D

Hey, welcome to the forums!

It's not too late to change careers, but you're getting there. I would recommend you actually do go to ATP if you have the money just so you can get done quick. However the soonest you could probably get hired by an airline is 2-3 years (after instructing or whatever) from now if everything works out perfectly.

If you do get hired, you'll be hired by a regional and you'll probably be sticking there for your career. Airlines have a mandatory retirement age of 65.

Welcome.
My .02 is keep teaching and get your ratings in the summer after doing your due diligence. If you want to fly commercially it is not to late, and maybe you might find a decent gig as a flight instructor. At least you don't need the FOI.

Hey! I was a secondary science teacher too before I started flying, my students got tired of lessons involving airfoil design. welcome to JC!
