Newbie question!?!?!?!

Hey guys...another questions for everyone. How do regional/major airline pilots communicate in the cockpit? Do they use the intercom system like I'm used to in GA planes? Most of the pictures I've seen of pilots in the majors looks like they do not where the big and clunky headsets so they may be able to communicate by just talking to one another.

Do regional/major airline pilots use the same type of headsets that most GA pilots use? I know the headset Doug said he used is a lot smaller and does not cover each ears. Is it possible to use a set of David Clarks for airline use if one wanted too?

Sorry for the newbie question...I know you guys will set me straight!!

Thanks!!

Normal voice conversation is sufficient in most cases. The cockpit is quiet enough for that. We also have the ability to communicate through our headsets using an intercom system. I threw away my "David clamp (David Clarke) head vises" when I moved out of turboprops to jets. I now use a small Telex boom mike (provided in each aircraft) with a personal molded ear piece. A boom mike is required per FAR's below FL180 as it ties into the CVR.

None of the aircraft at Delta have an intercom system. We just talk.

At mach .77, the MD-88 is very quiet. You could almost hear a pin drop. Seriously!

Slight hijack, but not really...

I've been using a ANC headset for the past few months I took it off in flight for the first time last night to put on a pair of foggles. Wow... A 172 is LOUD.

Cool! I didn't know it was that quiet. So I assume then when you want to speak to ATC you have a button that activates the mic?

Thanks for the responses A300 and Doug! Ya learn something new everyday at JC University!

Yup!

There's a push-to-talk switch on the yoke, and another push-to-talk switch on the COM panel too.

This is probably "TMI" or "too much information", but if you pull IN on the switch, you can broadcast on the radio. If you push OUT on the switch, you're talking on the cabin interphone.

Cool! If you're a newbie there is never TMI!!!!!

So you say the cockpit is fairly quiet in the MD-88.....would a plane such as 737/57/67/77 with engines close to the front be any louder or does that not really make a difference at all?

Please tell me know one has ever gotten confused and asked ATC to get them a coke or the FA for permission to decend?

All the time!

My favorite is when people give these long PA's over the frequency!

B75/76 are pretty quiet too. Most of the noise comes from ducting and air flow from the "packs". Like Doug said, push-to-talk switches are located on the yokes and also on the radio console. Push one direction and you only talk to ATC. Push another and you're only talking across the intercom/interphone which is what we do when we're talking to a mechanic during pushback or sometimes to each other during flight when we don't want jumpseaters to hear us

There has been some talk, well, just a wee bit, about putting in an intercom system into the 737-800 because of the noise level.

Apparently, they're just as loud as the 727's which were earsplittingly noisy. Right, DE727UPS?

Did ya hear me?

True, it's the thing I miss most about the 88.

Huh?
Pull in? Push out? How?

pull in, push out...

It's like a vertical tab that hangs down.
