New York Transit Strike

It is very encouraging to me that a work force would strike:

-to save pensions for not themselves but the workers who come after them. Not pulling up the ladder.

-Knowing it is against the law and dealing with the consequences to protect their jobs and their future.

-sticking it to management during one of the busiest times of the season to prove a point.

It is very discouraging to me that the union management:

-would in the end betray the local branch.

-The local branch management was more worried about his own ass then his due payers, the people he is supposed to protect.

-and that a contract was hurried into place to end the strike, the same contract that was voted down earlier.

It's a good read. Makes some thoughts spin around in the noggin.

That strike was a mess. The leaders ended up serving time in jail, and now the members have portions of their paychecks garnished every week for several years to pay off the enermous fine that they got hit with for carrying out an illegal job action. The net result? They lost money as a result of the strike.

The lesson everyone should learn: never engage in illegal job actions. You'll only hurt yourself.

I'm all for strikes and worker rights but I really can't get behind government entities that constitute a monopoly striking, or even being part of a union that uses its power to increase wages. It is extremely unfair to the local taxpayers and users of the system.

If they had a solid union leadership then I disagree. Their union sold them out to save there own behinds and not get into anymore trouble then they already have.

The workforce was unified and willing to break the law to protect their futures.

You've gotten some bad information from somewhere.

EXACTLY! They have us by the short and curlies! These guys wanted big raises (like 6%/year during the contract) and they wanted the retirement age (to receive their pensions) lowered to 50 from 55! Boy, it'd be nice if more people in the private sector got pensions and didn't have to for all the pork in the public sector.

USA Today had an article today saying fed jobs pay $7(?)k a year more and benefits are worth $30k/yr more compared to the exact same job in the private sector.

So basically you're telling me instead of striving for better we should knock others down to our level to even it all out?

I know a nice cab driver , with a Limo , Yukon , and a town car in NYC. He will drive your from La Guardia to the Statue of Liberty for $40 ( and I mean FAST! ) , most want 50 to 65! There is a biding war with the cab drivers because of the slow economy. He'll drive you and your family all day for $300! Stay off the subway , its fun for one ride!:D

No....What I would say is that it makes no economic sense to place large burden on the private sector which is the financial engine so that government employees can live with relatively higher standards of living.

When those who have it "better," get it through taxation, I call foul.

Umm..how does one drive to the Statue of Liberty? You mean to Battery Park where the boats depart from? ;-) I don't think they've built the Statue of Liberty Monorail yet.

No , I meant he drives you right up to the steps of the base .....:sarcasm:

But I do like how they re-screen you AGAIN , plus a puffer machine after you get off the boat from battery park to the island!:D
