New United CEO

I'll miss the long awkward gazes into his eyes on the safety videos and in the magazines.

Good news for sure, wasn't a fan of Smisek. Hopefully some fresh peeps can effect some positive change at the top. Some of my friends think I'm nuts for really wanting to work at UAL but I think good things are happening and it's going to be strong airline going forward.

I will believe that for your sake and others. Up until the firing, I thought they were doomed so to speak but this firing may be a blessing in disguise. I hope folks fair well when all is said and. done

Great. Most of us at XE knew smisek was a scumbag as early as 2006. He was instrumental in flushing coex down the tubes because he felt labor costs were too high. He did the same thing across the board at CAL and UAL as soon as he could. He made the pizza so cheap, you didn't wanna eat it. It can only get better from here.

I hear you. I lost over 200k after the bankruptcy.
Oh it was a special time, alrighty. We (pilots) were pressed into concessions- that is pay cuts, and we all know what happened to our pensions. And for the record, Greenwald was a major supporter of the ESOP. He started all the new "teams" and "task teams". He tried to make the managers "coaches'. In the end, he really had lost control over everything, IMO. Then they wanted to give us raises that were smaller than our per diems and more stock. lol Remember the marvelous We Don’t Just Work Here? Wolfie was our hero. Where's that sarcasm tag again.....Couple of years later, it all went to crap. Then we (again the pilots) did the slow down low down. Eventually along came 2001 and then the bk. The only small compensation senior pilots got was the lawsuit won against ALPA over the pension plans debacle.

"Smisek, who was chairman, president and chief executive, will receive about $4.9 million as a separation payment."
Oh, I weep for him.

AND $3.8M in shares of UAL at closing price on Tuesday, plus additional vested salary, various reimbursements, vacation (he'll have a lot of time coming up!) and various additional contractual payments.

His private banker needn't be worried about payments on the Testarosa (or whatever he wants to drive).

It's not nice when you get caught with your (metaphoric) pants down! But most have stainless-steel undies.

Our legal system doesn't have many good ways to penalize CEOs for mistakes, unless they mess up tax-wise. Which they know enough not to, and can afford to avoid. Al Capone was a good teacher!

Greenwald wasn't responsible for the ESOP. Stephen Wolf and Rick Dubinski were. During my time at UAL Greenwald's tenure was by far the best time ever for employees.
This. I don't think he meant it was Greenwalds fault. I took it as a literal point. Sadly, there will probably never be a CEO like him ever again in this industry.

The ice cold steady gaze of a soulless body that operates on it's own right.

TL;DR he looks like dad gum Count Chocula.

Right after the merger he gave a spiel before the safety video that concluded with him giving the creepy stare and saying, "Enjoy your trip"...made me think each flight would enter some bizarre dimension where he would barbecue the passengers.

To be fair the videos with Kellner were almost as bad. Bethune just had a certain endearing quality that was so much less creepy than either of his successors.

Kellner's videos were hilarious!!!
