New Locations?

Hi- I'm starting the fast track private pilot program at Dallas on 8/1(then doing the 90 day airline career program). I'm making the move from upstate NY to Dallas, even though I've never even been there before.
Can you guys give me a better idea of the layout? How far are the living quarters from these airports? I've heard that traffic in Dallas is really bad and that everything is spread-out, which makes me a bit nervous given that this will be new terrain and I've got little time to get acquainted with the area before lessons begin. Is there a lot of travel to different airports in the area, or do we primarily use one (GKY)?

Dallas is a great place to train. The apartments,like Jeff said, are only about 4 miles from the airport. The traffic isn't bad at all. Once you get more aquainted with the area you can go the back way and avoid the freeway all together. Feel free to ask questions about dallas, as a lot of us have been through the program and instructed there for example,Capt Bob, Merlin,Pokin,Adrock, and Pilot B.

The living arrangements in Dallas are quite convenient. Don't worry about the drive to and from the airport.....its quick and easy. I've seen students even ride bikes before. However, I do advise against that.....the heat will be unbearable. Especially in August. Anyways, so what city are you from upstate?. I'm originally from Buffalo, NY. I think you have made a good choice for your career. Relax and enjoy it. If you have any other questions....don't hesitate to ask like the good SMOKEdog said. Late.

Thanks, Smokey, Tram & Adrock for putting me just a bit more at ease... though I still have no doubt this will be a big adjustment.
Adrock: I'm from the opposite side of the state-- Lake George, NY. Its interesting that you brought up weather because that was another concern. How often does weather prevent flying near Dallas? (It seems that the FL students get rained out quite a bit). I tried to take it into consideration when choosing a location, but didn't go on any hard evidence.

I've only lived in Dallas for about 5 months but I can tell you right now that you will get weathered out very few times from now until you finish ATP. From what i've heard and seen so far, the only problems you'll really run into is the spring when its rainy and windy. The afternoons in the summer here have been really hot and cumulus clouds start to build and you can get those evening thunderstorms but it's usually nothing like florida. I'd say Dallas is a great ATP location.
