New Guy Here

Good luck at Feb IFOD Blue Skies...I'm lined up for the March class...can't wait. Would go in Feb but need a little more time to get things at the home front ready. Best of luck!!! Keep us posted how it goes!

Hey pal, I am starting IFOD too, specifically March 31. Lets keep in touch. Can't wait to get out of my current gig. Would have gone to IFOD earlier but I am finishing one final online course for the bachelors degree which wraps up on March 6th. PM me and we can exchange info.

Sorry, I was under the impression that is was a Part 121 operation. So yes, I agree with you. Dispatcher certificate not required by the FAA.

We are a 121 supplemental, and all hold valid FAA dispatch certificates.

That is the case at almost all supplemental carriers these days - but I don't think it's legally required. I have heard that having a fully certificated staff helps with the certification process though.

My old shop was straight supplemental and they required dispatch tickets to even get hired/interviewed.

Yes, I would say that is generally the case these days - it's just not a legal requirement of the FAA for 121 supplemental operations to have licensed dispatchers. Off the top of my head, though, I can't think of a 121 supplemental that operates without them (not that I am an expert in that arena.)

There is no such FAR. There is, however, a FAR limiting how many hours you can be SCHEDULED to work.

This is true, I have worked more than 10 hours many times but never been scheduled to do so. However, there is no such regulation for 121 Supplemental operators - thus they are allowed to schedule people for more than 10 hour shifts. At my airline, several non-dispatch positions (ATC coordinator, ops manager, etc.) are also scheduled for 12 hour shifts, but they aren't actually dispatching any flights.

Currently Im working 4 on 4 off, 3 on 3 off 12 hour shifts. Come February, I'll be working 3 12 hour shifts (Weekends). I prefer the long hours and the time off, personally.

WIll do Macr3ady! (If I can figure out how to PM !!!!)

I'm ready and waiting for my February IFOD class to start and I have questions about lots of things, but I will only ask about one thing for now.

As far as work schedules go, is it more standard for companies to have rotating shifts where you are working all around the clock, or is it more standard to get set schedules?

My experience in transit is that there are set shifts that are bid on based on seniority twice a year and it is the same schedule everyday (or as close to it as can be) for 6 months. The higher you got in seniority, the more likely you would get a good Monday-Friday shift. But in aviation, it seems that working a couple of mornings followed by a couple of evenings followed by a couple of overnights all in one week is a possibility.

Mind you, I don't have to work a sweet Monday-Friday schedule to be happy. I've been in transportation for years and I know it is a 24/7 environment. I'm just wondering about consistency in shifts.

Which companies keep you on a rotating shift and which ones have you on a set schedule? I'm not saying that I won't apply for a job if it has a rotating schedule, I just want to know what to expect ahead of time.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Blue, Macr3ady here. I kicked my start date at IFOD back to 17FEB14. They still had openings available. After a short debate, and the every growing influence of how much I despise my current job, I took the opportunity and will be with you in the same class.

Shoot me a PM and we can exchange plans.
