New Freight Dog Aircraft

Max payload as a freighter is 6,000 lbs with a range of 400 nm. Wikipedia says a Do-228 can go 215 nm with a 4320 lb payload (and that General Atomics bought the program in 2020!).

One way of estimating weights that aircraft this size are doing well to have the max payload be 35-40% the max gross, so somewhere around 16,000 lbs MTOW.

Or scale-up from the Do-228, which has 70% the power of a C408. Do-228 MTOW is 14,495, so 20,707 lbs. That's above the 19,000 lb limit and the SkyCourier has a longer range at max. payload.

This thing seems to have specs real-close to a 1900D.

Its close, payload wise, though realistically both should bulk out before weighing out. Where the 408 i think will suffer is in speed/range for normal operations. It will have a harder time avoiding the weather, without large deviations, which in turn will require more fuel and so on/so fourth. My beloved, ugly 1900D i think should still hold the crown.
Then again I'm bias against anything thats a fixed gear multi….

It will definitely bulk out well before 6,000lbs of boxes. It would likely weight out in zones to get up to that type weight. I recall having a max weight per square foot in the metro and Brazilia.

Yea, the most Ive gotten in the 1900 was 5.5, and that was when most of the boxes were full of hand sanitizer (which is surprisingly heavy for its volume).
Typically, were running about 4.3-4.6k on normal runs with about 95 volume filled. The other 5% usually becomes a balance issue.

I recall the max weight per square foot flying nukes out of Ottawa. A keg carrying a tiny bit of nuclear medicine surrounded by 300lbs of lead. It was the only time outside of some random ad-hoc that I actually had to worry about weighing out.

Had a captain the other remark how it’s crazy that we are flying nukes. Ti was 0.2.

..except on the flights out of Bedford. We were all getting cooked on those flights! I doubt the lead curtain did anything and I never showed trending high on my dosimeter badge. I'm curious how that could be while flying nukes 3 days out of the week!

Cant be any worse that the side effects of breathing in the noxious fumes of somebodies “next day air” “fresh” fish juice that seemingly leaks out of every box.
I avoid our nuke runs, but every now and then I have to remember how to do the paperwork.

Funny, when the first nose-on pic went up early in this thread, I was thinking to myself, "you know, if you position yourself just right and look at this thing from the right angle, it looks kinda like a baby guppy.

That's the spirit! :)

With a proper freighter, first question should always be "Does it fit?", not "What's it weigh?"

As for fixed gear in a real airplane? That's not an option or a feature or a benefit, that's just a klack.

The propellers are a McAuley Blackmac.

But when I do a googsearch for the name "blackmac" all I get is an asphalt company: McAsphalt Blackmac sealant.

This amuses me because I'm certain to tar had the name first and McAuley couldn't be assed to do a search.

In a related story... I recently heard McDonald's is coming out with a new offering to support their exclusively online customers who are incapable of ordering in person. The McAsburger.

“McCauley”

I am well aware.

And to that I ask, who the hell would want an executive Caravan?
Oh I don’t know…folks who want to fly in style to their private grass strip on the coast, or any number of other folks I demoed. The Oasis interior doesn’t suck and it’s pretty much the only option in class for luxury transportation. Kodiak is a bit more Spartan even before we start talking exhaust fumes in the A/C.

Arriving in a Caravan immediately throws style out the window.

I have 2000 hours in the thing, it’s great at what it does. Let’s not pretend it’s an attractive airplane in any way though.

Around the PNW there are a load of people that use Caravans and Kodak’s to get to their island or fishing spots.

Sure. Sure. But don't confuse "style" with "appearance" (or balance with symmetry). The Twotter is no glam movie star, but she screams style. Kinda like an old International Scout.

Never know, it could work for certain operations. HP used to have a twin otter as a corporate shuttle.

They sure did, it was always cool to watch it come into SJC from Sacramento (I think MHR?) as they'd usually use 29 for landing back then (RIP) and come low dive bombing from base to final right over the spotters lot.

Also, in 2000, a woman jumped out of this one...sans parachute.
