Off topic, but on the subject of over priced crap at Sportys... anybody seen that new program you can get for a cell phone that lets you access duats??? Who would pay $5 bucks a month to go read tiny weather-code on duats on a tiny screen with no keyboard, when you have a frikin phone in your hand!

Anyhow, the quality far surpasses what AOPA had available. The only problem I see is there is no date listed on the charts. I know someone somewhere will question if they are up tp date.

The date on the procedure is not what tells you that it is current, it is the revision number down in the bottom left corner. Most of the procedures you throw away every 56 days are still current. That is why a normal Jepp service only sends you the revisions.

Whatever ! I don't know anyone that knows all of the Amdt. #'s and the dates that they took place. The date provides the quickest visual reference. If I see April 15th on the chart and the current date is April 30, I will know that they are current. If I see Amdt. 15 01081 that doesn't tell me a thing. Thanks for your insight though.

Seeing as the whole point behind DUATS is that they are free to pilots... yeah. Speaking of that... how long does it take to get access to them? I've had my Student Medical cert number for three months now and still no joy on getting in. BLAH.

Have you tried e-mailing a copy of your student cert. to DUATS? Check out the bottom of the DUATS FAQ page if you haven't already. I scanned my certificate and e-mailed; took less then 24 hrs to get registered.

Most of the people that don't like DUAT/DUATS simply don't know how to use them, and most often they are people that don't feel as comfortable around computers as they should. If you have a student pilot certificate, you should call the number listed on the website or email one of the contacts. They have to manually put your information into the system, since that student pilot cert number doesn't automatically show up in the FAA Airman Database.

Believe me...once you learn and get comfortable with DUAT/DUATS, you will never want to be without it again!!!

An FBO is a FIXED BASE OPERATOR. They are the ones that provide fuel, ramp space, maintenance and other services at an airport. Some airports have multiple ones, some only have one.

The only problem I see with Tablet PCs (cuz I had the same idea a few months back) is this: how the hell do you hold them/look at them when you're tryingto fly an approach, or worse yet and unfamiliar approach?

Them things are big and cant be clipped onto the yoke!

I dunno how it's done in the airlines, but I haven't seen a chart clipped to a yoke since my 172 days. Where I work you'll see the non-flying pilot holding the chart and talking the other pilot through the approach. The flying pilot will review the chart and brief the approach during the descent. The guys with tablet PCs work it the same way. They'll have two computers, they'll load the chart on both, but the flying pilot will stow his or her computer for the actual approach. If one computer fails they can quickly grab the other.

The only reason I wish we had Jepps is the crews write quite a few helpful notes on the charts, which are lost every 56 days.
