New Chinese Stealth Fighter or is it? :O

That's a HUGE airplane...but none the less, I'm not sold on the Chinese being able to fully develop a "stealth" fighter.

Why do they have to *develop* it when they can buy it?

Fair enough, but haven't the Russian's been less than impressed with the Sukhoi T-50?...and they're the only other ones that are trying to build a stealth fighter.

BTW, where the hell have you been?!

Or say, "steal" it from a military juggernaut that is in debt to them up to its bleeding eyeballs. Do not underestimate the Chicoms...people made fun of "Japanese Junk" for twenty years. Now they're all driving Toyotas.

What exactly did they develop? The just took a couple of these, blew 'em up and added some stuff. They are famous for coping other nations stuff, and then branding it as their own.

The question isn't whether they copied the stuff, of course they did. The question is did they do so effectively. My guess would be that the airplane (if indeed this is a real prototype rather than a proof of concept demonstrator) performs wonderfully and is cheap to build. However, the real value of the F22 (or so I've been lead to believe, anyway), is its ability to integrate the battlefield and simplify combat operations. One imagines that would be more difficult to "copy". Time will tell. Dismissing it as "Chinese Junk", however, strikes me as absurdly arrogant, and exactly the way a nation loses dominance on the battlefield.

I'm not calling it junk, because if it works, thats bad news. And they have a history of their copies working. But develop it they didn't.

When I say "develop" a stealth fighter, there's alot more than just building one that looks like it could be. Do the Chinese have the same materials to build a fighter as capable as the F-22? The Chinese have yet to develop a jet engine to power this aircraft and rely on the Russians. This aircraft doesn't have thrust vectoring nor the ability to super cruise like the F-22 is able to.

Also, just read this "Shih Hiao-wei of Defense International monthly and Bill Sweetman of Aviation Week have said that the excessive number of airfoils on the J-20 will challenge its ability to remain stealthy from all directions".

That's what I mean by fully develop :)

I know that they are not particularly relying on the Russians at this point as they have already taken the J-11B for the J-15. Should have no problems getting a thrust vectoring engine soon.

This article made me laugh...This is almost an exact copy of the F-22 mix with Mig's styling:p

Made in China products will fail. Period. It looks fugly. Period.

Keep making fun of the Chinese. They're not anymore like mom and pops knitting socks in the garage. They already own $500 billions of your debt, one morning you'll wake up and they'll own your ass. Just like that. They have officially built the most powerful computer on earth, have sent men in space, master very well the nuclear technology and can count on a fanatically nationalist army.

Shack. I think the plane is probably ten years away from being a credible threat (although what do I know?) What it certainly isn't is a joke. Just like the Chinese aren't a joke to be summarily dismissed by a nation that has sold itself to them for crappy consumer goods.

The cans on the back of it are a suprising design element to such a low observable jet.....then again, the T-50 really doesn't have much to say for itself in this department

Well stated. Not good to take the Chinese for granted.
