I know of a couple people looking to learn how to fly. One of my potential students owns a company and is willing to put me on the payroll. I would just rent the plane and teach them. Any potential problems for this setup?

Where is the plane coming from?
 
I would provide the plane from the local flight school. I dont think it would go under common carriage if I rented the plane for the flight instruction but I need to dig out my FAR/AIMS since we just moved.
 
Have you checked with the flight school? Most that I have known do not allow instruction to take place in their airplanes if you are not their employee.

Most flight schools I know operate like this.

I'm just gonna put this out there, but if you are on your students payroll, I would imagine you are going to have to be on some kind of insurance, and it's very expensive to be insured to instruct in someone else's aircraft. At my school it was anyways, that's why we did away with BFR's in other people's airplanes.

Why can't your students just rent the plane? I'm sure if you had a meeting with the flight school owner and the students and guaranteed some kind of usage, he would probably let you instruct in their plane.
 
Going to go talk to the flight school tomorrow. The payroll thingy just sounded simple for me and I was thinking I would be covered under renters insurance but if I will require additional insurance since I will be instructing then it will probally be best to just go through the flight school.

I'm not sure about this except what I said earlier, but something just doesn't seem right. Renters insurance covers YOU and only YOU in terms of who is flying. Giving instruction is a completely different story. Try to get on the schools payroll for these students(mini contract?) Definately talk to the school first.
 
If this guy is going to learn how to fly, and want to buy an airplane, just have him buy one now. Airplanes are an invetment, and right now is definatly the time to buy if you can afford. Just make sure you sell it as an investment that he can get his money back out of, and move on when he is done.

He's right. If you plan on going through commercial then it is definitely an investment.
 
Just have him buy a nice retract. Who knows he might say screw flying myself I'll just let this guy fly me and my employees around. Seen it happen more than once.
