New CFI vs. Old CFI

Today I had my first flight lesson with a new CFI because my old instructor, John, is tied up until August 24th. (Remember my old post? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)

So I meet Mike, my new CFI. We do a long preflight which I actually learned a few things, and soon took off. Mike is older, much more mature, and makes sure everything is done his way..

For example, My old CFI said rotate at 80 knots, but Mike says 67. This is confusing me..and I have no idea what to do-this is when jetcareers comes in!

Okay..
Should I:

-Stick with Mike. Mike could probably teach me a lot more then John but hes leaving town until the 25th
-Go back to John: I really like John, we're close in age, we have fun while flying, I learn things, and its not like a classroom atmosphere (which I like)..

When I came back into the FBO after my flight (all we did was 3 landings, waste of $108.00) John was sitting behind the desk. He was wondering why I scheduled time with the new CFI (guy on phone told me to), and I told John to schedule me in. Next flight is August 29th with old cfi.

I'm stuck. Should I cancel flight with John and schedule with Mike, or should I tell Mike I'm going to stick with my old cfi.

Keep in mind I just turned 16 and have a while to get licensed, and John has 15-20 students while Mike has about 3. I'm leaning towards Mike on this one but looking for some advice! HELP!
 
You are paying to learn to fly, not to make a new friend...

Fly with the CFI whom you feel is giving you the best value for your money...
 
what kind of airplane are you flying?

I'd reccomend that you stick with your original CFI (Mike) but ask mike if you can fly with john for your "stage checks". I know every CFI doesn't use stage checks, and if mike doesn't, than ask if you can fly with mike every fifth or sixth flight just to get a second opinion on how things are going. I don't think any instructor would have a problem with this.

That way, you can draw off john's experience while still retaining the scheduling flexibility and familiarity you have with mike.


Sick with john for your next lesson if you already have it scheduled that way.

152 with only about 12 hours. You mixed up the two, my original CFI is John..stagechecks seem like a good idea but this sucks! Their both good CFI's and its hard just to choose one
 
You shouldn't rotate at 67 or 80 knots in a 152....you should rotate at about 50 knots.

Yeah, I mixed up their names in my post, sorry.

80kts rotate in a 152?!? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif that's just about cruise speed! you are eating up WAYYYYY TOO MUCH runway rotating at both 80 and 67 KIAS!

You should be rotating at 50 KIAS and climbing at 67 KIAS for Vy in a 152!

As for whuch one to choose? Learning is the goal... which one will you learn the most from?
 
Haha, I guess 80 is a little fast..

I think I'm going to stick with Mike..I'll get use to him but in the first 10 minutes I learned so much more from him..

Wait! I messed up! old cfi said to rotate at 65 and climb at 80, new cfi said rotate at 55, in wind a little higher.

I can't believe I typed that wrong lol. Can you tell I'm rusty since my rockwall 2 broken feet accident?
 
You still wouldn't be maximizing your climb rate at 80 KIAS. The only time I've done 80 knots over the runway in a 152 was in a soft field takeoff, and we only stayed in ground effect that long so we could experience an "uber-cool" climb.
 
Just put the cowling screw on the horizon and go full power; it will climb /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

which cfi? Man that's like asking what kind of shoe you should go buy. Try 'em both and pick whoever you think will make you a better pilot.

65 rotate and 80 climb in a 152? That's faster than a 172...stick with your new instructor. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was pushing 130-135 knots groundspeed in a 152 going to my ppl checkride. I'm not kidding, either.
 
Try rotating about 55 knots in the 152 and climbout should always be Vy which I remember being 67, unless you're doing short-field stuff.
