Networking and You

All the responsibility none of the authority
You know the small aviation world? The one where "a guy knows a guy" and helps you get a break?

It also works when "the guy who knows a guy" knows a lot of guys, and uses his reputation to get you a job. He also is at the bottom of the information funnel.

It's a small world. When it's paid forward to you, and you start acting the fool, you haven't done your part.

Burning bridges is never a good idea.

My money is that someone bailed on a job and tarnished the recommender's name.

I've helped a few get jobs or advance at current jobs who burned the bridge with me or others involved after the fact...Guess what? They no longer have me as a connection. Whenever I meet somebody new in aviation, I try to go into it "you never know who might be on the future hiring board" mindset and act accordingly.

But....if you're going to burn a bridge, make sure you do it with 110% effort. Do not half-ass it.

I'm talking a full on sweep and clear.

Used to work with a very wise man who taught me, "Don't burn bridges, but if you have to...burn that <other word for female dog> to the ground!"
