Need your logbook?

I was flying gliders one day and the FAA showed up because someone said it looked like we were doing stunts over the highway (we were doing slip letdowns) and they asked the tow pilot for the ARROW docs and her logbook and cert. But it was over in 5 mins. They left after we explained how we let down from alt in the tow plane.
I imagine the reason they asked for the logbook was to check the 14 CFR 61.69(a)(3) endorsement, although I'm surprised anyone would want to see a logbook in such a situation.

It still boggles my mind that people are ok with ramp checks. Being detained at the whim of a inspector at random. No need to break any laws.

If you're going to fly airplanes for a career, be prepared for constant scrutiny by the FAA. I see them all the time in the airplane and in the simulator. They show up unannounced and make sure the crew and airplane are legal to fly. With only one exception in the past 22 years of airline flying, they have been extremely courteous and professional. Some are very knowledgeable about the operation (retired professional pilots) and others are not.

They never detain you, harass you or even make you feel uncomfortable. Just do your job the way you do it everyday and all will be well.
