Wow, that's freaking expensive as... well it's expensive. I pay less than most of those prices wet, with an instructor. Sometimes I love Arkansas!

This is my first post in this forum
I didn't know where to post my thread
but I guess this is the one that most people take a look at
so i decided to post it here
I have a dliemma with choosing an airplane for my ppl.
My local FBO costs $119 for cessna 152 1978model
$134 for eclipse da-20 2004 model
$135 for cessna 172 1983 model
$97 for J3Cub 1941 model
$112 for citabria 1974 model
I want to get trained in eclipse but it is so damn expensive and for cessna 152 i guess it is still expensive for an old model of 152.
Should I get trained in J3Cub even though it is for a sport flight?
Would I get a same training in J3Cub as I were trained in cessna?
Since J3Cub is old, I assume that it lacks new technologies.
does it matter at all??

Solution: Go to Funoutside Aviation Academy at fullerton airport. I'm from norcal but I go to socal a lot and I rent planes from FAA. The owner Bill is the most awesome person you will meet. He is bascially non-profit. 1980's fully IFR equipped C-172 p and m models for only 90/hr. You wont find it much cheaper than this. It used to be only $77/hr but fuel increases affected the cost. I fly at a non-profit club at SJSU and our 172 is $80/hr. So $90 is a great deal. His instructors are cool and the planes perform great.
Socal is one of the best places to learn to fly due to the complex airspce and variety of airports close by.

I would think an FBO that charges that kind of $$ for rentals is gonna rip you off other places. Get the books and other supplies yourself. The grumman trainer I'm learning in is 72/hr. Your really might want to consider finding another place because with rental, instruction, ground, landing fees, supplies and sales tax, this could cost you $10k. Also, can you do x-country flights or night flights in a cub? Part of getting your private is learning radio communication, VOR etc., so you'll end up in the cessna for half of your training anyway.
On that note, good luck with whatever decision you make. I'm only a couple hours in but it's amazing. I constantly say to myself 'i cant wait till ___day' (insert day of next lesson).

Jeez, I charge 85/hr wet for a 180 hp 172 that you will get a ton more done per hour than a cub or 152. 30/hr for instruction. IMO a j-3 or 152 should be rented in the 60-70 hr range with current gas prices. I could do your ppl for half that price. Xmas break?

Is vox same as vor??
It says on the flyers vox=voice activated intercom.
If it is, I guess the cub in this school has vox included.
Also, I have two more questions.
What is "wet" referring to? Is it referring to a new model of airplane?
I'm new to the aviation, so I don't have a good grasp on the terminologies that you guys use. xP
Also, would getting trained in DA-20 or c-172 help me to learn more and become a better pilot than getting trained in cub or c-152.
I have no previous experience with flight except for the start up lesson which was about 45 mins of flying.
But I certainly loved it.
It was a truly amazing experience that I have ever did in my life.
And again, I ,truly and sincerely, thank all of you for your awesome inputs and recommendations.

VOX is standard in any plane to talk to eachother (if it has intercom)
VOR is used for navigation, this can be useful to learn but not a necesesity.
DA-20/C-172/C-152 will make you a good pilot.
Cub/Citabria will make you a much better pilot.
it takes alot of finesse to fly a tailwheel plane. If you were to learn how to fly in one, I think you would be an excellent pilot.

First of all, I think everyone here know that they are truly amazing. No need to remind us... :laff:
Secondly, wet just simply means that the gas is included.
Are those prices Hobbs or Tach time?
Hobbs means that you pay for the exact hour.
Tach time means that you pay whenever your engine goes over a certain RPM. So taxiing to the runway usually doesn't get recorded since you are not using a whole lot from your engine.

If you have the means, think about buying your own plane and paying for an instructor. You can get a decent 152 for $20k these days, and 172 for a little under 40. Do your time in it and sell it for the same price you bought it.
