NDBs - When will they be gone?

Poor Canada...last time I updated the Jepp charts for Canada, I was adding a few new NDB approaches to airports with no existing approaches.

And...the first time I flew up to Canada, we landed at an airport with an ILS, VOR, and GPS approahes...and what'd we get? The NDB approach...they still like them up there I guess. I like NDB's too...simple is good! And you can listen to music on the ADF receiver!

UND had mostly dual 430's, a few old king's knocking around but I'm sure they've been phased out. it's just been 3 years since I've touched one.

Yes it's all GNS430's in the steam guage Warriors/Arrows/Semi's and Avedynes in the glass Warrios.

KLN89's phased out last Spring I believe. I kinda liked the KLN89, except it was difficult as hell to navigate in and out of the submenus.

Nope. As I said earlier - most ALL of the arrows and semis still have the KLN89's in them. Being a rough guess I'd say about 70% of the arrows and semis still have the KLN89s at UND. I do fly them all on a daily basis.

Doesn't matter, don't fly many XC's in the ARRO and no instrument.

Oh wait you're right....haven't flown in the Arrow in awhile... figured they'd phase those out too.

hopefully soon my friend........very soon. the days of the off field ndb approach in valley city are limited.

LOL yeah, that's actually the MAIN reason I asked this :D

As previously mentioned, the majority of our Arrows and Seminoles still have the bendix gps. I kind of like the Bendix equipped Seminoles, they have the KFC-150 autopilot which can be used for single engine approaches. This can be a big help when the workload is high, provided your stage check pilot lets you use it...mine didn't. Learn to love the Bendix gps, you won't mind getting one when you're flying the Seminole.

I got dispatched the brand new SEMI with the S-tec AP for my ride, never flew it before that day.
On a LOC BC at max fwd airspeed I couldn't find the BC button and thought "hey maybe it's smart enough to know" so I clicked it on, wrong move.

I always hear of many people screwing that Valley City approach up.
I can tell you that if you say, hold for 30 minutes in FAR, then shoot the ILS for a touch and go, and forget to reset your HI between FAR and VCY, things will not go well :o

"do you see the runway?"
"uhhhh (#(&#"

Oops. Unsat? Or did you quick disengage and hand fly?

Nah, he was OK with it.
He understood that I didn't really know how that AP worked when I couldn't figure out how to turn it on (switch on the bottom center row there) I was trying to save some workload after a long ride. No big deal, the BC to 17R isn't hard.

It started to swing and I nixed it ASAP. He was a cool check pilot, can't for the life of me remember his name, would have to go look in my log.
