NBC helicopter crash on video

I just saw a video clip of an NBC helicopter crashing onto a rooftop in New York. Looked like an effort to safely autorotate that ended badly. The three occupants are in the hospital with serious injuries, but they lived. Not sure how they survived . . . it was ugly.

I saw it on the evening news, but I'm sure one of you computer savvy dudes with a high speed connection can track down an on-line copy somehow.

Looked more like the tailrotor lost effectiveness then an auto gone bad.

Just finished watching the coverage on the 11:00 news here in the New York area about the crash. A LOT of people were VERY lucky today from the two pilots and reporter on board to those on the ground. Those aboard the helicopter have minor injuries. The pilot was trying to land the helicopter on the first rooftop till he hit the chimmney and flipped over landing on the second rooftop upright. A great accomplishment of airmanship.

Ironicolly NewsChannel 4 had another helicopter crash in 1998 into the Passaic river in New Jersey. WABC's helicopter the same helicopter that got this video captured the other crash live as well.

Where's the irony??

I am amazed that the three on board are ok. That crash looked pretty violent. It is kind of "coincidental" that the other news chopper managed to catch both accidents on film.

Was that the crash that happened live over the radio when the woman was giving her traffic report?

First of all there was a big shooting incident that four (4) news copters were covering at the time, and that's where Chopper 4 was heading to, so stop with the conspiracy theories

Secondly WNBC had two previous crashes, the one in 1998 and one in 1986 where the traffic reporter was giving her report, live, as they crashed. Pilot survived that one, she unfortunately didn't.

The only irony here is that WNBC has had so many copter crashed relatively speaking.

Actually, WNBC apparently had 2 helicopter crashes in 1986:

In 1986, a traffic reporter for WNBC radio in New York, Jane Dornacker, was killed when her helicopter crashed into the Hudson River. The pilot was critically injured. Earlier that year, Dornacker and another pilot escaped unharmed when a WNBC traffic helicopter crashed into the Hackensack River in New Jersey.

Note to self: Don't fly helicopters for WNBC.

I wasn't implying there was a conspiracy. If you read my post slowly, you will see I was merely asking if that other crash was the one I was thinking of.

Another poster answered my question. It was a crash that happened in 1986.

Wow thats was a some freaking crash did u see how it sputtered around for like a minute before crashing.

Glad all were well.

Helicopter crashes remind me of Indy car crashes. Lots of peripheral things flying off with the cabin intact somehwere in the middle of all of it. If you are very lucky.

The thing about helicopters is, all the energy is in the blades. If you watch it carefuly youl see the fuselage only fell 10-15 ft. The blades thrashed themselves to bits, but who cares. One of the big safety factors about helicopters is you can auto down to a site no bigger than your fuselage. Let the blades bash themselves to bits, who cares as long as you walk away.

That guy had some kind of flight controll problem. That clip looked like my one and only atempt to hover (lasting about 10 seconds). An auto due to loss of power should look like a normal, but steep, descent untill the last seconds when you pull collective and flare to stop all foward and downward momentum.

Looks like I was off on the autorotating thing . . . good thing I fly planes, not helicopters!

Glad that everyone on board is doing well. Could have been much worse.
