Navy College Program Questions!

Well I've been looking at this service that the Navy offers! While surfing around in the net, I came across the "On Base" courses offered, and saw that ERAU offered many courses and they are all taught either on base or distant learning which generally means online.

My question is, does the Navy pay 100% tuition while your in active duty for this degrees?

If they do, it can be a great advantage to many sailors, and now many of them can possibly leave the military with a degree.

What you are asking about is called Tuition Assistance. TA usually pays about 75% of the total tuition for the courses that you are taking, and you can only use TA while active duty. The ERAU courses that are offered on *some* Navy bases usually reduce their course prices to compete with the other colleges that have an "in" with the on-base education office.

There are actually many more bases without an on-site ERAU presence, than the bases that actually do. AND, they are almost 100% geared towards the aviation maintenance guys. That is, the courses that they offer on-base are really mostly aviation maintenance classes. Not too good if you are trying to get classes geared towards becoming a pilot. Sometimes, (very rarely) will ERAU help sponser an on-base flying club that they are able to help you get some flying time with.

The Navy College Fund is a stipend on top of your GI Bill. If the GI Bill will pay a max of $36k, then they will offer you the Navy College Fund, which I know used to pay up to $45k on top of the GI Bill if your ASVAB scores were considered more attractive than the average Joe joining. Not sure about the details of what the Navy College Fund will pay for flight training, nor if you will ever even be able to burn through all of your GI Bill money before reaching the Navy College Fund money. I believe it is more clever marketing than anything, this Navy College Fund.

The GI Bill will pay for 60% of your flight training, past the PPL. That is, it is mostly geared towards paying for the IR and CMEL/CSEL. This will allow you to get a lot more of ME time without really feeling the pain that most people feel that don't have the GI Bill luxury. You can use the GI Bill while you are active duty, in addition to TA. So, if you were taking classes for ERAU on-base, TA would be the way to go. If you were doing your flight training at the same time as taking classes on-base, I would tap into the GI Bill money at that point.

Navy pays 100% tuition through tuition assistance program. You can only use it on active duty. However, the TA is only good for few classes, 5 or so in my case at ERAU. You can top-up the TA with GI bill, or you can use Gi bill for everything while you in or when you get out of the Navy. Gi bill also pays 60% for advanced ratings (all above private license) You can also CLEP some general subjects and get some decent credits for it which I would strongly suggest, it shouldn't cost you anything at the base, and it runs at a reduced rate outside the base. 100% now? That is really good. Was 75% when I got out back in 2000.

Yeah it's 100%, but it's confusing to the new guys because there is a limit on total amount of money for a year. My TA runs out after paying for 5 and 1/3 of classes, it could be different at other schools if classes are cheaper, ERAU classes run around 630 bucks or so, pretty darn expensive. Anyhow, you can knock out these 5 classes in 6 months or so and then you'r stuck for the rest of the year, unless you either use VA or some other source of financing.
TA does not pay for the books by the way. Books are your own pocket and can cost anywhere from 30-40 bucks to as high as 130 or so for some classes.
Yup, not exactly pain free deal :D

Well it still is a really good assistance! kinda cool to be able to do so much in the military for almost free.

Does ERAU still have the naval aviation club? I think I remember a guy telling me about it. I t sounded like it was a good deal for him.
