Hello All,
I was wondering if some of you could tell me what helos and airplanes fly in the Navy,Air Force, or Marines. A website would work to. I am trying to decide if i want to fly helos or airplanes. I have taken a ground school class but havent taken the test. If any of you could give me some good reasons why to fly for helos or airplanes it would help. I also dont mind what i fly as long as im flying

(Apache would be a awsome helo to fly though)Thanks for time and help

I meant the differnce between flying helos or planes. What made you pick what you wanted to fly?

When I was looking for what branch of military I wanted to go into, the decision was basically one of speed and thrill. The Air Force planes go fast - really fast - but as an Army aviator told me, flying 200 mph in an Apache 10-20 feet off the ground is quite a thrill in itself.

For me, I always wanted to be an astronaut, and so high-speed planes were it for me, which made it easier for me to decide. Of course, one of the most agonising decisions I ever had to make was the choice between Coast Guard Academy or AFROTC, and I chose the latter; the biggest part of that decision was not the helo versus plane, but rather the different missions of the two services.

Then, it all became moot when I decided to embrace engineering and pass on being a pilot altogether.

So, I agree with MikeD that it all comes down to wanting to serve. I wanted to serve in the military first and foremost, and how I wanted to serve was secondary.

But ultimately, the answer comes down to you. Take a ride or intro flight in both planes and helicopters and see which one fits you better.

thanks mike, i have taken abuot 3 demp flights in a plane never in a helo though, i should contact my FBO and see if they give demos in helos to

You really don't get to pick the plane you fly. If I remember right, never done so myself though, once you get through the first flight phase of pilot training you are chosen for either the fighter/bomber (T-38) track, or the tanker/cargo (T-1) track. Once you get through training you fill out a dream sheet of the top planes that you want to fly, then the air force decides where to send you based on your scores in pilot training, your dream sheet, and a whole bunch of other factors. The only way you get to pick what to fly is through doing good in UPT.

For a list of air force aircraft, check out http://www.af.mil/factsheets/.
On the right side of the webpage there is a list of all the aircraft with a link to their fact sheets.

Not true. Apply to ANG units and you get to choose what aircraft you fly ... so long as your accepted. Want to fly C-130s, apply to C-130 units, want to fly A-10s, apply to A-10 units, etc.

That assumes you do well enough to progress to the T-38 phase of training. If you don't, you will likely find yourself on the street half way through UPT.

I'd be curious to know what plane(s) are the most popular on most peoples "dream sheet". Anyone want to take a guess?

Not necessarily. I had a guard F-16 guy in my UPT class. They didn't think he was fighter material finishing up tweets, so they worked him a slot with a different unit. He went on to T-1s and now he's a fellow gas passer.

I dunno. It seems a lot of people want to fly pointy jets (F-16, F-15). On the other hand a lot of people might want to fly something that will transfer over to the airlines well like a cargo or tanker job.

Doesn't seem like 2,000 hours of single engine PIC time will get you a job with American.

Of course it's probably the A-10. Seeing as how it's the most badass plane in the inventory.

Actually, 1000 hours of single engine PIC time will get you the job. Are you somehow saying 2000 hours of Seminole time is more worthy than 2000 hours of tactical jet time, young Padawan?

For a while there were going to T-1s but they have gone back to going T-38s for the past several years now.

Do B-1 pilots train in the T-1 or T-38?

Gott leave something for folks that flunk out of IFF or FTU. I suppose they still ship those to the Bones/BUFFs

Not anymore, more then likely they will leave the service due to force shaping.

Kind of sad if that is the case. The folks that tracked 38 were more then likely more profficient then the people in their class that tracked TONES... It is always nice having some bitter Bomber pilots floating around, I will miss them
