sounds to me like Romo's Bitch should hav been called Sissy Whiner. If he is so traumatized, he can go back to his interior decorating job.

More killing of Naval Aviation, beginning post-Tailhook and never ending.

His ass should be MeatPlow.

"I've been in and around naval aviation for like 40 years and I've never heard of a call sign that had a nasty turn to it," says Lehman, who ran the Navy in the Reagan Administration and flew A-6 jets as a Navy Reserve aviator. The notion that call-sign guidelines need updating "is a crock," he says. "It's the first time I've ever heard of someone making an issue of a call sign," Lehman adds. "Certainly they would never pick on a gay guy like that."

Righhhhhhhttttttt.....

I guess he got bored out there on the ship and couldn't come up with anything better to do than complain about people making fun of him.

At least in Army Aviation we don't have to worry about losing our traditions. The only tradition we have is iron-fisted squashing of all signs of tradition.

I think he may be too sensitive to be flying strike fighters off of carriers. There was a guy in one of our Hornet squadrons who had the last name of Packer. His call sign was "Fudge". He was even on the Blue Angels with that call-sign. He was fine with it. Was not a problem back then, and that was after Tailhook.

My understanding is that he isn't even any type of aircrew.

The irony is that he proved his call sign by tattling on everyone and sporting the Cowboys get up for a photo set with the Navy times.

...won't this guy come under more scrutiny now for making a major fuss about this and it going public? More especially if the tradition is scraped in favor of PC!

OK, just a few things here.

1- he wasn't even a pilot but an administrative type.
2- He is an ensign, yet according to the article, already has a 16 year career? Shoudn't he be an LT by then?
3- At the end of the article, it says he's being assigned to a SEAL unit. And he thinks that pilots are insular and non PC?

Just another sign of the times.

Surely, men and women who have sacrificed years of their lives to training for and engaging in activities in which the objective is to kill other human beings, couldn't possibly enjoy camaraderie and making light of their deadly duties. They should never laugh at a coworker's mistake, cry for a fallen friend, or dare to show disdain for the enemy which tries so hard to kill them. They should be mindless and politically correct machines which enforce the policies of a righteous and civil government.

But seriously, what was this uber-sensitive piece of dung doing at a callsign review in the first place? I will fault the Navy on one count. That being that they invited an outsider into a tradition meant for those that have been through and can actually appreciate what the whole thing is about; that you can laugh at your mistakes, move on, and do one of the hardest jobs a person can be asked to do.

Truely, sad another tradition is under attack. Heck, even at my airline most of us have nick names.

I met a F-14 pilot a few years back whos call sign was scorch. He got it when he was flying the CAG to a NAS for start his timeoff. The CAG ended up missing his flight to PHNL because the F-14 got on the brake too hard and had a brake fire. He said till this day he still gets pieces of the brakes sent him at home, stuffed in his flight bag, or other places. He said he has never lived it down.

Nice. Heard a certain very prominent current ADM (whose son I was in flight school with) got the CS "Boom Boom" after he blew all his tires on a cat shot during student CQ. I think that may have changed, but all the sim instructors at Meridian still talk about it.

This.

The real mistake in this whole thing was allowing a non-aviator to participate in the traditions of aviators.

How many time in the last 20 years have we been bitten by outsiders who were 'offended' by the antics of the people in the fraternity.

Hey, guess what outsiders: it ain't your freaking club, so don't walk on in, get offended by what we do in our club, and then call down the thunder because your feelings were hurt and ruin it for us.

 Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!! Well said.
Call signs or tacticals that I know of were based on either 1) play on your name, 2) a characteristic or 3) an incident. #2 and 3 are the funny ones and a surefire way to get one to stick you didn't like was to complain about it. Worse insult I could imagine is not getting one because you didn't belong or nobody cared. I knew a guy C/S huggie cause he would get drunk on liberty and affectionate. No biggy :)
