nav logs

Hello ~ Do you use the same nav logs for IFR that you use for VFR, or are there some good nav logs out there that are geared more for IFR? Also, I've heard of sites you can go to and get different nav logs. Any idea?

Thanks
Fred

i use the same ones for IFR and VFR. cool thing on IFR ones is that the mag courses and distances between fixes are easy to dtermine if you're using the victors. no reason to spend more money on nav logs that will essentially giv eyou the same info.

As roundout mentioned, since IFR planned routings tend to be along victor airways or direct RNAV/GPS courses, there usually isn't any reason for TC-Var-MC-WCA-TH calculations, although you will still be interested in GS/time calculations for ETA and, more importantly, fuel planning purposes.

So there are simpler navigation logs available for IFR such as this offering from Jepp

But, as roundout said, there's really no reason not to use the ones you already have.

From a practical standpoint though...other than your checkride you will never bother to use them.

Where I fly you can expect to get something different from what you filed almost every time. At that point all that planning is for nothing!

The great thing about IFR flying is that you just do whatever it takes to keep the needle centered!

I had an instructor go off on me for using VFR nav logs for planning an IFR cross country. This is the only time in my life that I've had an instructor yell at me.... and for no reason at all. For all practical purposes, using a VFR nav log for filing IFR is perfect! The only thing that doesn't work as well is fitting it nicely into your Jepp plate binder. As long as you don't mind having an extra piece of paper floating around, it's not an issue. Realisitically... beyond a checkride... all you really need is a plain ol' piece of paper to write your route down on, and you should be good.

tell me about it. I got rid of him after that lesson...

The only nav logs I commonly use IFR are the ones that I print out of DUATS flight planner. That is how I usually plan IFR flights, unless they are just a short training flight in the local area.
