National Air and Space

Absolutely. Kind of a trek from the city, but if you're ever at IAD with a long (4-5 hr) layover, take a cab over and check it out. It's free , has some great exhibits, and has an amazing observation deck of IAD arrivals/departures.

Agreed. There are more airplanes at this museum than you can shake a stick at. The space shuttle exhibit is now fully open (though you still can't look inside) and the SR-71 is absolutely incredible.

Note: there is a shuttle bus that runs from the main Air & Space facility to the Udvar-Hazy Center at IAD. I don't think it's free, however.

Highly recommended!

I absolutely thought it was worth it. I had a blast just showing my stepmother the evolution of the engines and explaining just what it is I operate!

When I was ORD based I loved the long DCA overnights just because the hotel was located very near the mall there, and all the museums, the Air & Space Museum included. I must have gone there half a dozen times, and saw something new every time. It was amazing. If you have the opportunity, please go through it.

yeah, definately. I was there this summer. Some of the pictures I took are in the aviation photography section of my picture gallery at http://jriegel.smugmug.com if you want to take a look. Definately some cool things to see there. I was actually rather unimpressed with the observation tower as it was pretty far away from Dulles itself. Granted, there was one runway they were using where the planes came right by the museum, but that day they really weren't using that runway very often. The rest of the museum was awesome though, a million times better than the main air and space museum.

D'Oh!

Just realized this wasn't about the museum on the mall. I didn't know there was one actually in the IAD airport! (Can't remember the last time I was at IAD.....)

It's not actually in the airport. It's about a mile south of runway 1R, but it's about a 20 minute cab ride from the terminal. Fare will probably run you $10 or so. Definitely worth it, since the museum itself is free! Allot about an hour from the gate of the airplane to the door of the museum, just to be safe.
