Does anyone know the approximate union dues for NATCA? I know that they are a controller’s best friend and everyone joins, but I was just curious if there was a fee to join and than a deduction each paycheck.

I do not know what pertinent parts, if any, were changed in Miami recently, but this is from the 2006 NATCA Constitution as posted on the NATCA Southern Region website (http://nso.natca.net/Constitution.htm) :

SRD-1 Annual Membership Dues (6/90)
The annual dues of regular membership in the association is set at 1.5%
of the individual members’ base pay, step one.

I know that they are a controller’s best friend

I agree... you will find others who do not

...and everyone joins,

not so

but I was just curious if there was a fee to join...

Again, from the NSO website:

SRD-9 Initiation Fee (5/90 4/94, 9/98, 9/02, 4/06)
No initiation fee shall be assessed for individuals who become members
within three months of being eligible for the first time for membership.
In addition, individuals who were members when they left the
bargaining unit shall not be assessed an initiation fee if they become
members within sixty days from the date that they return to the
bargaining unit.
All potential members who do not meet the above requirements shall be
assessed at the sum of one years dues at the pay grade of the individual
when joining, or within six months after the effective date of the first
collective bargaining agreement covering these employees, whichever is
later.
The National Executive Board shall have the authority to declare open
seasons, not to exceed thirty days at a time, no more often than once per
year.
Any active member who resigns from the union or is automatically
expelled because of non-payment of dues, in accordance with Article III,
Section 8. of the National Constitution, shall not be allowed to rejoin the
union without paying an initiation fee.

...and than a deduction each paycheck.

Payment options include payroll deduction and other billing methods.

As already posted, the fee is waived if you join within a certain amount of time.

Also, keep in mind that the 1.5% of the base pay is the base pay of the old pay scale, not the B scale. You can get the difference rebated back to you.

That being said, if you're looking for an actual number I don't know if it's kosher to post it here...but, my night differential more than covers my dues - and I don't work in a facility that has mids. I have it deducted automatically.

Doesn't matter. Join and keep your mouth shut for 1 year. After your probation ends get active. You don't want to be a non-member trainee. You do want to have some input and influence on your working life for the next 25 years. It can be better and you can help make it better.
