I need some help... I'll be finishing up the PPL in the next couple of weeks, and plan on attending the 90 day program in mid-January at Dallas or Phoenix ...

Any ATPers out there that is going to or has gone to the Phoenix location? How about Dallas?

If anyone has any feedback on any of those locations it would help me out greatly in my decision on where to attend..

Thanks

Dallas!!!
I've been to both locations and highly recommend Dallas over Phoenix. The Dallas location is great, awesome instructors, airplanes, and SIM. They are also expanding the Dallas location with new offices and a maintenance facility. I'm sure that there are others on here who will agree.

Is GKY an ok place to train? From the stories I've heard its a mid-air waiting to happen. It seems to me IWA would be a better airport to train at.. but I may be wrong. Also, I was leaning torwards Phoenix because of the great weather during that time of the year... I don't want to be grounded often because of the weather. I have heard great things about Dallas on this board... just want to get the overall picture of both locations..

Thanks for the responses..

any non-towered airport is a midair waiting to happen. I have had the closest of all my encounters at GKY. but, if you are safe and you communicate its not a problem. If you want quality as far as airplanes and SIM, Dallas is the place. Everyone has an opinion and mine is Dallas. if you can go check them both out, I'm willing to bet you would choose dallas.

ATL recently got a new sim just as spiffy as the one in JAX.

Bah.

Just like anything else in flying, non-towered ops is as safe or as dangerous as the pilot makes it.

Thats for the replies guys..keep em coming..

Nobody out there that went through the 90 day acpp at IWA??

I'll for sure end up taking a trip out to GKY and IWA to check everything out before I make a decision.

ATL is a nice location. I think that was my Hub during the x-c phase, it seemed as though every trip we made we ended up at least stopping in Fulton County. they got a new sim in ATL within the past month? From what I remember the sim there was the same as the GKY sim, does it have a 430? Whereever you do your training you will enjoy it. If Dan is still down in Phoenix, he will make it fun, he's a great guy.

yeah, I think thats what I was saying when I said "but, if you are safe and you communicate than it's not a problem."

ATP is putting new Frasca sims at a whole bunch of the locations. I helped install one in Orlando yesterday. I think the new sims are a bit nicer then the old ASTs that a bunch of locations had. The cool thing about them is the panels are just a big computer screen with cutouts infront of it so you can see the "guages" showing through. It's sort of like flying a glass cockpit, but not really.

No idea. I would guess they are getting one though although it may be one of the old ASTs that has been replaced elsewhere.

[/ QUOTE ]I'm not with ATP but I do fly out of IWA and can attest that it is a safe airport. I believe flyn ace 99 is an instructor at ATP IWA.

Dallas is at a busy uncontrolled airport, indeed. In fact, they are currently putting in a new tower (to be completed sometime next year). But I wouldnt poo-poo a location because of the airport having a tower or not. You have to look at the whole picture and make the decision based on what you believe is best for you.

You are going to get the same quality training at every ATP location. Personally, I think Dallas is an outstanding location to do your training and there are many other posts on this forum that speak to that.

What needs to be done to schedule a visit... Can you take an interview at one location and still attend another?

Thanks for all the info

Call the 800 number (800-255-2877) to schedule a tour. Recently, they seem to be just telling people to show up (NOT recommended). Let someone at the local training center know youre coming. The 800 number guys can connect you to those locations.

Yes, you can interview at one place and then attend another.

I am doing the same. going to visit ARR - Chicago location this upcoming weekend. Hope weather is nice, so I can fly there for building cross country time.
