Myspace/Facebook and Interviewing

Also, please note: As indicate this isn't the only thing that came up in the background search, there are "other" issues that came to light, so it is just a piece of the puzzle.

In reality this is what has happened as companies cannot and willnot talk about ex-employees for fear of lawsuits. We cannot even get the clients to comment for reviews for fear of issues. Good, bad, or indifferent.

Was she ASKED if she had ever touched a stripper, or was this typical interview conversation for her? ;)

My interviews have to stages - can they do the job, where you speak about previous experience and what not - then it gets casual, I want to learn about them, who they are. People relax easily around me and all sorts comes out.

Here is a sad fact to consider. The average company in the USA considers employees liabilities, not assets. In the world we live in, when almost anyone can sue anyone else for anything they want and WIN, a company has to take this view.

An extreme example:

A pilot has a myspace account that shows him or her doing "risky" things, skydiving, base jumping, etc. This pilot is then involved in a fatal accident where it APPEARS he/she went below mins. Family members of the pilot find the myspace account and sue the airline for having a "rogue" pilot on staff.

Extreme yes, but if it were to happen the families would probably win all sorts of money.

Very good point.

My friend got fined $1000 for the university because she was supposed to be living in the dorms but she wasn't. She put that she was commuting but actually lived in a local apartment. Guess how they caught her...........facebook!

You say that but we were shown high school kids (15-16) with face book accounts. How did that happen??? Also, once out of school (college) how do you keep the .edu account to keep your account open?

Facebook is now open for everyone

Facebook is now open for everyone

It's open to everyone but I don't believe you can look at random profiles. You still have to be in a person's network or be someone's friend to see the full profile.....I think.

Wow...E dawg and Iain are in the house.

My personal opinion about myspace is it's a great tool for weeding people out. As an example, I posted at the myspace thread here at JC. I've got some friend requests that, when I looked at their page, wasn't exactly in line with the youth ministry outreach sort of thing I was trying to get involved with when I joined myspace in the first place (I know that has nothing to do with JC).

Nothing wrong with a bunch of pics of guys drinking beer, but it's not what I look for in a myspace friend. That sort of thing might not be something you want an interviewer to see. Might get by with it at the current level of desperation at the regionals. But I'd lose it before I applied at a major.

Actually, a picture showing her topless and beer bonging (is that a word?) very strongly suggests that she has very poor judgment.

Oh, please. I'm one of those "conservative military" dudes, and even I don't think that.

If she was doing this in the middle of the company Christmas party, I can see where you would question judgment. But if she's at Senior Frog's in Mazatlan, who cares?

I don't think that has anything whatsoever to do with judgment. They're not hiring nuns...

would I give a rat's ass about what someone did outside of work? Nope. Wanna show me pictures of him or her stripping on the side? So be it, as long as it doesn't interfere with his or her ability to do the job I'm hiring them for.

I'm all about doing the job and doing it well and going home and doing whatever you want to as long as you're not breaking the law. Want to dress up like little boo peep and have your wife act like a shepherd after you're done with work? Be my guest, just get your work done!

Right on.

I'm very, very picky with Myspace. Basically, if you don't have my phone number, why in the he11 do you need to be on my friend's list? It's nothing personal, but it's personal. There's just way too much "Fred knows Sally, who had Bob on her list, who wouldn't add Sarah, who dated Tim, who like Diane . . . ". STOP IT! Get a frigging life!

Now, if I don't want these people on my list, why in the heck would I want total strangers?

I don't even want my employer to know the types of movies I watch and the types of music that I listen to - why would I want them the read even more stuff on Myspace?

Isnt one of the biggest thing in an interview is to find out if youre a person to spend 8 hours a day working with (or a 4 day trip in the case of the airlines)? If this girl was bonging beers topless, sounds like just the person I want on my overnights:insane: .

I guess Im alot more laid back then most hiring managers.

It's called having a life and having fun.

Facebook/myspace is a way of keeping in touch with friends; I talk to a bunch of people on there who I'm sure I would have lost touch with long ago. If someone wants to use that against me, well then their loss! I don't want to work with a bunch of robots anyways!

(not that I have a bunch of wild pics on there either :)

Found ya sucka!! you better accept or I'll start a poke war!!

To original poster: my fbook is on superduper restricted. I only friend people I know. Everyone else can only see my pic, which I try to make tasteful. Just be smart: I'd give an example but... I'll just say.. you can always restrict people from viewing your pictures...

I guess this is for me. I just wanted to let people know what background companies are doing. Also besides this and criminal backgrounds, you do know they check your credit history as well, right?

Dependant of the position even a contractor has access to company information that is the them, "classified". They cannot, and will not, have contractors (or employess) that could possibly become a liability.

I have your phone number and I'm not on your list! :laff:

I really have nothing to say that hasn't already been said. It would be good judgement to not put incriminating pics/information on your site, but at least we know the girl likes to have fun. Overnights with unfun (did I just make up a word?) pretty much suck...a RON with her would probably be a good time, no matter where you are :)
