Myspace/Facebook and Interviewing

I was in a meeting this afternoon on some new hires for larger companies (my client places contractors at Fortune 500 companies). In the process we have to do the drug screening (mostly hair now) and background checks. We use a particular background search company and it was interesting to see the package they supplied for some candidates.

It includes their myspace and facebook pages, and copies of some of their friends sights showing the candidate doing some questionable things. I will admit we have a woman to about do a second interview and now we have pictures of her at Spring Break last year, topless doing a beer bong. Sorry, how is this candidate going to answer to this....I will tell you that there are a few other things on the background that is going to knock them out as well, but I heard a few weeks ago that some universities are telling graduates to cancel these accounts, now I know why.

Before I get jumped on as to what people do outside of their job is THEIR choice. Yes, and when documented on a website, it just gives another reason to circle file it and move on to the next candidate. I know we have all done things we wished he had done (trust me, I'm older then most you you here and I have ALOT more of these things in my past) but remember with today's technology you never know when your past will catch up with you!

I can't believe "myspace" would hold any credibility to someones employment future. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me. Can they even use myspace as a reason to not hire someone? Is that legal practice?

It is information voluntarily made public by the person. Why couldn't you use it?
A friend of the family lost her job as an assistant coach of a highschool team due tot eh fact that she posted pictured of herself drinking (underage) on her my space page and had most of the girls on her team as friends so they could see the pictures.
this made her a "bad example"

our first shirt in the air force was browsing people's myspace pages and handing out article 15's for underage drinking, to much drinking, and one guy wrote in a person blog how he got in a fight with his wife and threw her through a window. he's getting kicked out.

all I put on mine is a few fun pictures, some music, and that's it.

pretty sad they are going to use this against the new hire. what ever she did in the pictures was in her past, and does not tell anything about the person.

Actually, a picture showing her topless and beer bonging (is that a word?) very strongly suggests that she has very poor judgment. That's going to be a very relevant consideration for any employer.

No it is not legal here in NV. We had this happen with someone my company interviewed. The HR guy looked him up on Myspace and there he was smoking pot ect and a video of him beating someone up. Nevada is considered a Right To Work state meaning one can be fired anytime for no reason, its at the employer's disrection but they have not determined if Myspace is a legal way to conduct a backround check. There is some controversy here in Vegas about some teachers who have pretty nasty Myspace pages. The students got angry with the teachers about something and looked them up on Myspace and WACK. Im not sure what happend to the teachers but my guess is they are out of a job.

:yeahthat: haha MF

Anyway, this is one of the reasons I haven't ever signed up for 'myspace'.

One thing that would concern me is having someone on myspace with my same name, and the background company hands my potential employer their info. There'd be nothing I could do.

Edited to add - I have seen some peoples' myspace pages that list their airline as their employer, and have other "questionable" things on there as well. Not very smart.

The thing about a right to work state is you can also fire or not hire somebody for no reason at all. All the employer has to do is look them up but don't tell them why they were either fired or not hired.
"We just feel that you are not the right candidate for the job"

I need a link for evaluation purposes please!

Actually, no joke, my company hired a woman who posed nude in a well-known adult magazine. I met her once up at the paper tiger room at the hotel; she was a couple classes ahead of of mine. My class left town for sims so I don't know how she fared in training.

Personally, I think whatever someone does outside of work that isn't illegal is none of the company's business. If she can make a good FO like the rest of us, whatever.

True. Was she hot though? :)

Ah, there's where you're wrong; it speaks volumes about her judgment--or lack thereof, as the case may be--which prospective employers are very interested in. Good judgment is not something that develops overnight, or has an on/off switch; if someone does something really stupid like posting a pic of herself topless doing a beer bong (a two-fold exercise in poor judgment: doing it in the first place, then posting a pic of it!), chances are very good her judgment hasn't improved much since.

EDIT: Whoops, Minnesota_Flyer beat me to it....

I actually disagree with some of you guys, your job is a part of your daily life and all the stuff that goes on myspace pages used to be a moment of that person's life. Now the question of right or wrong is gonna go to the same person that decided to act like that.
Somebody mentioned something about a guy beating his wife and throwing him out of the window, personally if I have a wife that is an FA on a flight with that pilot in command, I would be kinda scared of what may happen. I don't want a guy like that to be exposed to the public in that capacity.
everyone has to understand that whatever you do as a human being in your daily life will come back to bite you in the back or tap on your shoulder and push you further in your career.

What is wrong with doing a beer bong topless?

If the women was of age at the place she was doing it... what is wrong?

If she is 18 and did the beer bong topless in Mexico where she can legally drink she shouldnt be punished for that!

Here's the thing: If you want a private life that's kept separate from your job, keep it private.

If you don't want a private life, post it on the internet.

I tried to search for the thread some time back about someone looking at pilot myspace sites from some of the larger academies. I haven't seen any of them, but what do you think an airline would think of them if they showed them doing some questionable (while legal) flying?

I know right now a pulse can just about get you a job, but lets say it a more repuable airline. Do you want them flying for you when you have 1000 resumes to pick from???

She was ugly, right?

(Biting tongue at dorkiness of this thread...)
