Good Morning Doctor.
I recently found out this site which is really interesting and I have read with attention posts of people in case close to mine but not exactly in the same case.
I've always dreamt about flying and being a pilot but not gifted by mother nature with vision I couldn't achieve my dream completly. I mean flying as a job.
I currently hold a pilot glider pilot with 200 flight hours and have flown by now a bit on single engine aircraft but don't hold a plane private pilot license.
My problem is that I have a myopia -5.75 both eyes with +0.25 astigmatism component. But my main problem is that i have a small angle strabismus. Unvisible when looking at me but detectable by tests. I saw that FAA standards put a limit at 6 diopters esophoria. In my case it seems to be an esotropia.
My post is about my possibility to get a Class3 medical FAA and maybe ( upon flying experience ) a Class 1 medical FAA.
I've worn, included in my corrective glasses, prisms ( a 3 diopter prism for each eye ) to compensate for 6 years, a strabismus surgery operation was not necessary. And I have no problem with that in practical life, to drive, work, sport, etc... I'm all right. I never had any complication since the time I began to wear prisms. I see normally, I mean I don't see double. I recently went back to an orthoptist's to get a check report. I was measured, 14 diopters at 6m and 12 diopters at 33cm for convergence.
My depth perception is not 100% because I don't perceive all the stereopsis, I perceive a part of them. My binocular union and mobility are good.My vision field is normal.
I seem to have read a post on this site from somebody with a small diplopia in a part of his vision field.
Vision is the only problem I have. I'm ok for all the rest, I have a very good health.
I knew in the past a colleague who got strabismus surgery in his chilhood and who currently holds US and canadian professional pilot licenses.
I've also encountered on the net some canadian pilots with such problems who succeded in getting a Class 1 and now fly professionally. Cases impossible to imagine in Europe where medical standards are strict.
I contacted a doctor at Transport Canada to know if my chances were nil or not. He told me that it was rare ( but for me rare doesn't mean nil )but it happened that a case with prisms was accepted. My myopia was not a problem.
My question is, in my case can I can hope to get a Class 3 for private pilot licence in the US, and further with flying experience and a waiver a Class 1 for professional license?
Did you know or still know some similar cases and if those people could go on a career ?
Thank you Doctor for reading my message and for giving some of your time to answer me.
