myopericarditis

Hey doc. I went to the ER yesterday for chest pains and after their initial reaction that it was a heart attack based off the ekg, they told me after seeing that my arteries werent clogged, that it is myopericarditis. The cardiologist told me that I can not fly for six months which is understandable. He said after six months i have to pass a rigerous stress test to get my new medical. What will this entail? Will this be for every medical from here on out? As a busy flight instructor Id love to try to get the ball rolling on what needs to be done before six months in hopes i can get the new medical on that day, what can I do? Also any concerns about the medicines they might give me that the faa wont like? Beta-blockers okay?

Other than this Im a very healthy 23 year old, my nurse was very happy with all my numbers so this stress test should be easy for me I imagine, but what about way down the line in my career? Thanks for your help

The cardiologist is correct. You will need to do a stress test to maximal predicted heart rate , an echo cardiogram and have the standard FAA cardiovascular evaluation.

You will not get the medical the same day. The documentation must be submitted to the FAA for review and a Special Issuance. This is a specifically deferrable condition.

Beta blockers are OK.

How long do you think the turnaround time will be these days? I have had my information sitting with the FAA since the first week of october... over three months... is that normal, or is it a bad sign?

Yeow!!! I feel for you. Other than being the proverbial tail residing flea I have no knowledge of the Medical Certification Branch's inner workings. I was led to believe that there was a 90 day maximum turnaround on medicals. The 1st week in October puts you over that timeframe. Have you called them to at least get a status? With a touch of sarcasm, I'd say it's normal which is a bad sign.

In my case I'm healthy as a horse, supported by a cardiologists report. At the time of my regularly scheduled medical, the AME decided that he didn't want to deal with a false positive I divulged on my 8500-8 and deferred issuance to the FAA. I'm 52 days and waiting...

It is normally a 8-10 week wait. But remember we have had 3 major holidays in that time period. If I were you I would call your AME and ask him if he would call the FAA and see where you are sitting in the Q.

Thanks for the info... I have called the FAA numerous times myself, also have AOPA calling on my behalf.. the FAA lady who answers the phone promised to flag my application as "expedite" but it's been about 2 weeks since that was first promised. :(

Doc,

I finally talked to an AME here in San Diego that my work always refers to and he said it might not be a six month wait just for myocarditis as long as a sonogram and ekg show fine, so I'm kind of confused on the discrepancy.

The only reason he wasn't certain right away was because the pills I got prescribed which I didn't know the name off at the time (It was just luck that I ran into this AME while I went into work to get my last paycheck, so I wasn't prepared)

So the cardiologist put me on:
Lisinopril 10 MG
Carvedilol 6.25 MG

So what are your thoughts on this AME saying a 6 month grounding may be incorrect? I only heard it from the Cardiologist when I was still in the hospital, but it sounded as if he contacted an AME before he told me. I could be wrong. So very confusing and I just want to get back in the air.

The best thing is to get the documentation together and submit it to the FAA. They will approve you or tell you to wait 6 months. Then you will know.
