Today i visited the Aviation Tech Center in Wichita, Ks touring their Aviation Maintenance Technician program. They had at least 5 actual planes that student worked on (small Cessnas) and 3 of them were inside a small hangar attached to the main building. Further down the tour i walked into a "Lab" area where they had the "trainers." They 1-2 mock cockpit setups, 2 landing gear units, and a couple of other neat gizmos. on the otherside of the partition, there was 2 regional size(?) jet engines and a couple of other aircraft motors. At this point in my visit i was really impress by the amount of equipment they had but there was more to come.
There is a building behind the school, actually an oversized shed, which had even more motors that student were in the process of disassembling. This same site had even more trainers that students dismantle and operate where they completed the reassembly. there was probably 2-3 of those trainers.
By far, i was overwhelmed by the amount of technology and equipment this school had. The student coordinator that was walking me through the building was most likely under the weather cause i could hardly hear her and she admitted that she had no idea what some of the equipment did. Neither did I!!!!!!
The program is FAA approved and they have two school in Wichita (i thought there was only one site). Total cost of school is rather high $15,000 which includes Written Test, tuition, books, lab fees and supplies. No tools are not included as well as the practical and oral tests are no in that price. She said it would be around $500 for each of those tests.
They don't offer career placement but do post job announcements for students to do their own legwork. Financial Aid is available for this and if you can maintain a 3.5 GPA through your coursework you can get a hefty scholarship.
this looks the best deal in town without moving out of town to get this training. Also they offer an associate degree program like many other.
