(No, seriously. I went to college and got my ratings, all Part 61, on the side. I did go to ATP for commercial-multiengine.)

how much did it cost and what state is it in

I spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000 in part 61 operations, including a jaunt to ATP. I shopped around, flew at different FBOs in the local area, and also flew whatever I could lay hands on.
Paying up front = going in with debt = that small paycheck just got smaller.
