So I have spent a while looking at all my options tonight.
The background:
I have been offered a really good paying job (on par with my present pay to start & getting better quickly) starting 3 days after I get out of the Navy in July. It is 4 on 4 off shift work.
I turn 31 soon. I think a realistic goal is to be hired by age 35.
The plan:
Fly 6-7 hours every shift week(8 days). Would finish in about a year including some missed weekends for weather/family/whatever
Keep the day/night job and instruct locally part time(goal of 10 hours/week) That would put me at 1500 hours by the end of 4 years including lots of extra weekends available to make up for off time/weather/vacations.
Payment:
I am looking at several home equity loans for this endeavour.(kudos to loanfinder.com)
Realistically I can afford to pay enough per month that by keeping the normal job and instructing on the side, the loan would be paid off at the end of the 4 years. So about regional time, I'll have no flight training debt to deal with.
Problems I anticipate:
1. Will I be able to fly that much via my local FBO in 4 days off?
2. Can I reasonably expect to log 10 hours every 8 days as a CFI only available 4 days of those 8?
Problems I worry about:
1. Will the industry have rebounded and then gone soft again by the time I am ready for the regionals ( or will I be furloughed shortly after date of hire)
2. How will this slower schedule hurt me as far as seniority goes.
3. Wife wants to reproduce. When is a good time to create little whipper snappers during all of this.
4. Will I ever have to call a doctor because 24 hours after taking levitra I still... oh nevermind.
Opinions anyone??? Suggestions???
I plan to present it to my boss I mean wife later this week.
