My experiences and FYI for any CR Busts (READ)

I don't know if anyone mentioned it but here is my experience by asking other students and from observance from the program. I am currently enrolled and so far my experience is ok to so-so. So I'm just finishing the whole program up. The program really rush you through to get all your ratings done which is a plus for me. I am not saying which location but it is in Cali. I havn't busted any CR but here is my write up. You really have to STUDY really hard on your own in order to get through it. No slacking off.

Sometimes there is WX, MX, schedule issues and you have to accept these changes even though you are schedule that day and things get canceled. Don't be all grumpy just because you arrive there for to find out your not flying that day. I've seen some people get all mad and thinking they should have stayed home blah blah blah.. Things change so be prepared.

When doing any FTD training or any ground training, you get around 2-2.5 hours. But instructors just either do any of those for about 1.5 or less and logged in your logbook as 2 hours every time even though you spent with the instructor less. Then their off doing something else like chit-chating to other instructors for fun and not focusing on the schedule for the students. So the student were scheduled for ground at 1 and instructor didn't do it till 1 hr later leaving the student there waiting and had to kept asking when is it going to start every time.

I have also asked a student about the time you get in the planes. Student says although the site says you will get to logged that hours but in reality it will be less. That's just not fair. Lets say you get 2 hours to use the plane for the CR and you only used up 1.2 and passed, the remaining time when you finished the program won't be available to you since you "passed" that portion of the rating. Once your done, your done. Those remaining time you have won't get used up. So pretty much your short-changed I should say?? they don't let you use those extra time you have left.

From what I have known a max 3 (I think) CR bust will get you out of CFI program. Any CR busts from any rating that requires additional training time will be charged 2:1 rate (double) which you already paid in the program that will take your XC time away. Your XC time will be taken out as double in order to retrain to you to pass the CR. So 1 hour of retraining = 2 hours of your XC you will lose. ATP never mentioned this for anyone before or after you signed up. The instructors only tell you this when you bust a CR and while your in the the program. WTH?

Some instructors are really good and some are there to rush and build time.

If you want to work for ATP, you need to go through standardlization in JAX while working in the call center. Then from there on you put in your wish list at which location you like to instruct. There will be a waiting list for popular locations. I think you would work at the call center until the position you wanted is opened up.

I have also heard ATP had changed their curriculum effective now. You will now do your Private and Instrument in the 172 and doing only 1 CR combined instead of 1 for the Private and 1 for the IR. After that you will do your MEL add-on and then off to do your XC.

So there you go about my experiences currently and so far its been alright. Just the fact that your XC time gets reduced if you busts CR. If you ran out of time, you will need to buy more and shell out mooorreee $$$$. Never see anywhere ATP said that when you signed up.

They get you through but for the price?? Its b/c of all those seminole times.

As it should be.

Sometimes there is WX, MX, schedule issues and you have to accept these changes even though you are schedule that day and things get canceled. People who have problems dealing with that will likely have worse problems dealing with the rest of aviation. I actually was surprised at how casual the attitude of some of the ACPP pilots were when I visited ATP for my CMEL... it's not the sort of thing I'd be casual about, and I'm surprised to hear of anyone who would rather have stayed home than come in and done sim work, study, or anything else. It just surprises me.

I have also asked a student about the time you get in the planes. Student says although the site says you will get to logged that hours but in reality it will be less.

You should never have a situation where you log more than you fly.... however, if your example below is indication:

That's just not fair. Lets say you get 2 hours to use the plane for the CR and you only used up 1.2 and passed, the remaining time when you finished the program won't be available to you since you "passed" that portion of the rating. Once your done, your done. Those remaining time you have won't get used up. So pretty much your short-changed I should say?? they don't let you use those extra time you have left.

No, you're not short-changed at all...that's how flat-rate programs work. There's nothing unfair or odd about that. It is spelled out quite specifically in the contract that you sign.

The instructors only tell you this when you bust a CR and while your in the the program. WTH?

The devil's in the details and in the margins there be dragons. The course is streamlined, and exigency is costly to both sides. And as far as being "mentioned" -- Did you actually READ the contract that you signed, or did you just talk to someone and sign on the line?

Some instructors are really good and some are there to rush and build time.

You've described the entire industry. :>

I have also heard ATP had changed their curriculum effective now. You will now do your Private and Instrument in the 172 and doing only 1 CR combined instead of 1 for the Private and 1 for the IR. After that you will do your MEL add-on and then off to do your XC.

Interesting!

When I signed up to get my CMEL, they gave me a contract to sign. I have it around here somewhere, but I seem to recall it detailing the provisions of the program as pertained to checkride failures. As far as the value ... I thought the value proposition was good when I signed on the line, and I still feel that I got my money's worth from the program. I'd go so far as to say that I think that, overall, ATP's programs are a great value... but as with anything, you need to know what you're getting into... and as I was just saying in a thread the other day, it's hard to imagine what you're getting into unless you already understand a lot about aviation and the aviation training industry.

Thanks for your posts. Wow, didn't know you had to work at their call center before you can become an IP for them. About how long is the average stay down there?
