My Chances

I'm in the process of applying to Purdue's flight program right now. Purdue is the only aviation related program/university I'm applying to. My heart is not really set on going there, but I'd like to keep my options open.

However, for those of you who have been accepted or are in flight right now, I'd like to know your opinion of my chances of being accepted into the program. From what I understand, it's predominantly based on numbers, which could be bad for me.

Here are more or less my credentials:

-SAT: 1210 (570 v 640 m)
-3.9 gpa (just barely in top 10% of high school class)
-taken a fairly large amount of honor/ap courses
-lot of community service (student ambassador for a national math conference, couselour for math & technology camp, hospital volunteer, etc.)
-activities include: nhs, varsity soccer and track, student pilot certificate, among others

I know this might not be the right place to be asking this question, but I'm curious. Thanks.

your way too smart to pursue an aviation career man

Try and bring the SAT to 1300 and you're in. Im not sure how much weight it carries, but that's what my advisor told me when I applied. Your GPA and other stuff is great, and otherwise should be fine! Let us know if you plan to come tour campus! Good luck!

I don't go to Purdue, but was accepted into the program...

30 on ACT (no SAT)
3.8
out of state (have heard that hurts, but as I said, I don't go there, so I couldn't tell you whether or not its true)

keep in mind this was 4 years ago so it may have changed

Thanks for the responses. I'm submiting the application within the next couple of days, so we'll see what happens.

Good lord - these are your stats and people are telling you it's gonna' be hard to get in???? My grades weren't anywhere near yours and I got in - 10 years ago - it's always been competitive but geez - has it gotten that bad??

Just going off what I was told 2 years ago. Honestly, the caliber of some of the flight students is seriously questionable... of course, my fellow Boilermakers on JC are all highly intelligent, and deserving of their admittance.

Dude, just submit what ya got, and I'm sure all will go fine. Your GPA is fantastic. The one thing that I was very disappointed about with respect to Purdue's application was the lack of a place to put some personal information about your accomplishments during high school. It seemed to me that admissions were based on course load, GPA, and SAT/ACT scores.. but it did make things much easier

If you have any questions, just shoot me an email, PM, or IM (EdwinaEvKid)..

Again, I think with those credentials, you'll be fine! Good luck!

I go to Purdue. Although Im in Aviation Managment, not the flight program. Judging on people I know, you should get in fine. However, I do agree with Evan, that I just can't picture some of the people in the flight program flying professionally.

Again, thanks for the responses.

I do agree with this. The Purdue app has been by far the easiest/shortest app I have done. It was a break from writing essays, though, which was nice.

Well, I submitted my application on Nov. 3 and got the word on Nov. 18 that I've been accepted into Flight.

I have to wait and see if I get into the school I applied Early Decision to. If I'm deferred to the regular applicant pool for that college, I will definately be visiting Purdue sometime (maybe for one of the 'Purdue's For Me' days).

Anyway, I'm very excited to be accepted into Purdue as I'm sure it provides a good option. Like I said, I have to see where else I get accepted to make a decision whether or not to attend Purdue.

If anyone has any advice (for things like housing), it will be much appreciated!

I believe freshman are still required to live in dorms the first year. Take a look at the campus map - I don't remember the names but there are some 'H' dorms down State St towards Airport Rd over by Purdue West - they would be the closest to the airport but remember that your first year you'll have several(many) classes on Campus. After your first year there are many, many apartment choices on the west side near the airport. Alot of aviation students tend to migrate to Beau Jardin apartments. There is of course frat housing if you're inclined to take part in the Greek life.

Freshman are not required to live on campus anymore. If you want to live in the dorms, I would recommend Harrison or McCutcheon. I think these are what Jason was talking about. They are right off State street and are the closest to the airport.

I was recently accepted to Purdue's Flight program for the Fall of 2005.

95 overall avg.
several ap/ib classes
student license
several extracirriculars
two jobs
1150 SAT score
i apparently go to a very "demanding" public school (or at least the district likes to brag about that, although im not sure if it made a difference)

I am not sure if I'd like to attend Purdue or not...mainly because I am from upstate NY and moving to a large school in Indiana may be culture shock to me. If I end up going I'd like to try to double major so I could diversify with another degree.

Funny - I had culture shock moving from Indiana to Ice Station Bingo. It is a beautiful area though(outside of town) - it was really nice during the 3 weeks of summer before it got cold again.

Jason

Well, it turns out I won't being going to Purdue.

I got accepted early decision to another school, which I will be getting a backup degree from. I'm sure Purdue has a solid program and it would be a lot of fun to go out there and fly throughout college, but I think I'm sitll making a good decision.

Thanks to all who provided insight on the school!

So where did you decide to go to school early decision?? I am split between purdue and schools with no aviation at all.

I'll be going to The College of New Jersey. As of now, my major is Computer Science, but I might be switching to Computer Engineering.
