This probably a really easy one, but still could use some help.

I went out to fly this morning, and the first 152 I tried had a faulty alternator that failed during run-up. So I went to another 152, and it was also acting up.

When I turned on the master, a strange noise came from the intercom, almost like the emergency weather warning tests they do on TV. The rest of preflight went smoothly, but then once turned the ignition to start, the propeller only moved just a little bit then stopped...the noise on the intercom stopped as well. I pulled the ignition out, and the noise continued. Retry, same result.

My first guess was a dying battery, but something tells me it might be something else. Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad alternator letting the battery bleed down through it (maybe through the noise filter on the alternator).
