Re: Murphy\'s law ...

Yeah, the post doesn't really make any sense unless you explain what happened.

I hate to ask, but what broke?

My guess would be his airplane, since he wrote this

Lets break that down for the slow people

Um, yeah. I had that part. I was looking for what SPECIFICALLY on the airplane broke. Dude, you know me better than that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Was it an engine, oil pump, hydraulic pump, gear snapped off, prop flew off into the wind, that kinda thing. I've never accepted the "It's broken" answer. I want to know what part, where, and how it happened. So, come one pilot602. Give.

Re: Murphy\'s law ...

Lol.

Not a big deal, and luckily it happened at a local airport so while it's not "home" it is in town. It's stuck on the ramp at an airport here in PHX that's not our home airport. Anyone wanna play find the apache? lol.

So, I dropped off a friend of mine at this "mystery airport" and when I went to start up the right engine the prop kinda shook, moved about an inch in the direction of rotation and stopped. Ok, so I thought maybe the battery was weak (it was like 106º outside) so I killed all non-essential electrical, ran the left engine up over 1,200 RPM (generator cuts in at that point) and tried it again. Same thing. So I try a few other little things - with little hope it was going to start - and eventually shut down the left engine, got out and took a look at the right engine/prop area.

Sure enough the starter gear that engages the prop gear (and in turn spins the prop making the engine start) was stuck in the out position (i.e. it was engaged with the prop gear and it shouldn't be).

So, long-story short the starter shot craps and we gotta swap it out. Luckily new replacements are still made and it'll be a fairly easy fix ("just" unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one). So I had to get a ride from the north part of town back down to Falcon to pick up my car.

Not a huge deal and we're lucky it happened here in town and bot out in BFE at some untowered/unattended airport.

Oh well, it's always something. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sounds like an epidemic. That happened on the right engine of the Seneca I train in last week. However, I don't OWN the Seneca, so I don't have near the expense. How long is it gonna be grounded?
