Multi upgrade time!

The airlines hired another group of ERAU instructors...so those of us that have been there for about a year are moving up. I managed to get into the multi upgrade, but can only fly the 'noles IF I can get my MEI ride finished ASAP. Instructors a few years ago were stuck in the singles for years...alot of 3 and 4000 hour instructors were in the Seminoles (no hiring going on). I wasn't expecting this so soon! It's a good sign as far as what's going on in the industry. Unfortunately, I'm working on the MEI at a school with one old Duchess, and it is booked solid. This is gonna be close...it is good to see that everyone is moving up though.

c'mon...you gotta be kidding me? If I follow you correctly at ERAU you have to "upgrade" to a multi-engine instructor? And of course only if their hiring for multi-engine instructors? Otherwise there stuck being single engine instructors?
Man...I thought if you were a CFII with a MEI you could teach any kind of student.
Thats the way it is at normal flight schools or FBO's. Might wanna check them out for employment bro.
If I have gotten everything ass backwards forgive me.

Oh and congrads

Well congrats but if I'm understanding you there are guys still instructing with 4000 hours???/? I cant help but wonder what they are thinking unless they are getting hired by United to fly 747's as there first job but if they are only going from there to like Comair they must be nuts. I know guys from Air Orlando that are going to COEX with 1500 and one year of instructing.... is there some kind of advantage at ERAU if you stay for 4000 hours that I'm not hearing about? Not trying to be sarcastic just wondering what the mindset is.

i think he means that there were guys in that situation. My old flight instructor started instructing at Riddle just before 9/11. he got hired by expressjet last july. he probably had like 3500/500 when he went to training.

With an instructor corps of 100+...not everybody can fly the multis, even with an MEI

So what they do is take the higher time instructors with MEIs with a good pass rate, and when the need arises for multi instructors, there is an upgrade class. The good thing is, once we begin instruction in the multis, the time goes up very fast...solid 6-8 hrs per day. Their new Pt142 courses include alot more multi time for the students, and thus us as well

I've already tried part 61 instruction...I built about 150 hours in 7 months; when I started at ERAU, I had that much in month 1

There are still a few old timers at ERAU, mostly check pilots, who have 3-4000 hrs, some more. I've heard alot of reasons...most of the older folks retired from the airlines, the younger ones are either waiting for a green card or already have a family and say they get paid more with better benefits and schedule at ERAU than they would the first few years at a regional...not to mention the low pay during training there. Food for thought, but that doesn't discourage me. I'm kind of obligated too, considering their paying for my MBA

That's why when ERAU called me for an interviewed I politely declined

. To think, about this time, I'd just be "upgrading" to a twin...lol.

Why don't the instructors that hit 135 mins go do that? Or are they too starry eyed to consider freight first? I had a friend that was instructing there and he didn't even consider it...sad.

I would actually like to go fly freight or Pt 135 charter before getting into the airline biz. I would like to start a business similar to that in the distant future, and it would be good to see the operational side of it. But...gotta get the multi time first.

Um, 135 mins don't say anything about ME minimums. True there are a lot out there that have them, but places like Airnet don't require much (if any) ME time. I know if I had 1200 TT, I would be looking for a job like that, not instructing at Riddle for another 2000 hours.
