Multi-Commercial

After more than a year of instructing, it's finally time for me to get my Multi-Commercial add on so I can be ready for the next job opportunity. I've tried to start it at two different places locally, but A/C keep braking and my schedule is packed. Time to take 4 days off and just get it done!

I'm near IWA and wanted to do the 4-day program there, but I guess they don't offer it. Is Vegas a good place to go? I'm just got my financing approved and am planning on heading up there since it's within driving distance.

Is it really going to get done in 4 days? I really can't take anymore time off or afford to stop and start my training again. I'm instrument current and ready to go! Any advice for succeeding in the program would be greatly appreciated.

read the seminole training supplement, chair fly the crap out of the maneuvers, know it 100%, read the POH, know it 90%. If you go in prepared, you will do much better.

I've done pleanty of these. Honestly nothing to worry about. If you know the supplement and have some time in a twin you will be fine. Knowing the manuevers will help you the most. However knowing the POH I'd debate. Know perhaps some of the performance. But lets face it by going to ATP if you know the supplement you know the important items. In addition your CFI will let you know what you have to know for the DPE you have. This is one of the only programs i'd actually recommend doing at ATP. You'll get it done in 4 days. Get all your time in. Do the stuff in the sim before going out and flying. If your CFI debates this tell them you had former CFI's who instructed at ATP tell you to do so its very beneficial. By doing so you wont waste the time in the plane by getting set up. You'll be ahead of the game.

Chances are too that if you go to VGT to get your multi-comm, youll get Andy Montoya as your DE. A very cool guy and non-intimidating. However dont bust, its $500 for the first try, and $500 for the re-try. :D

The only reason it would take more than 4 days to do the multi-comm, is if it gets windy. Also, dont argue with the instructor about how it could possibly be true that a heavier aircraft is better in regards to Vmc. I remember sitting in VGT prepping for my CFI-MEI checkride and we spent what seemed like 2 hours trying to explain this to a guy who was getting his multi-comm.

what do you mean by heavier is "better" in regards to vmc?
better, implying a decrease in vmc? did your instructor say heavier is not better? because if better means a Vmc decrease, then it IS better.

most unfavorable weight is lighter... Vmc increases as weight decreases.

am i wrong?

Lighter weight is worse for Vmc. Lighter weight makes Vmc speed go up. Vmc in the Seminole is 56 knots. If you are very light, the Vmc speed will increase and the aircraft will Vmc at a higher airspeed.

More weight = more horizontal component of lift, meaning better DIRECTIONAL control. Most people cant grasp the fact that we are talking about directional control, and not just being able to float around fat and happy.

I never found this to be a problem.... Perhaps it is just how one states it to the students.

For what its worth, while I dont recommend flying to anyone anymore as a career, if you do decide to get your multi-comm, def. go to ATP..I went to richmond and it was an awesome experience.....You will get it done in the 4 days...Just study the supplement....Youll do fine...I recommend richmond..

Multi-come is one of the easiest courses (next to ATP), if you follow the advice above and study ahead of time and show up knowing what you need to know. Nothing was worse as a CFI at ATP than getting someone who hasn't flown in months show up for an accelerated course having never cracked a book. :banghead:

now tell him why Vmc increases with altitude!
