MTSU vs. Auburn

im a senior in high school and cant decide between mtsu and auburn. how do their flight programs compare? how expensive is it to fly? mtsu has a great website, but i couldnt get a lot out of auburns. i know you get credit hours for flying at mtsu, but what about auburn? i know mtsu has a great/new fleet, how is auburns? any info would be great.

I believe that AU only has the ground school portion of flight training, no actual flight training. However, I know for a fact MTSU offers both. So, if you go to AU youl can take the ground school portion and pay for the flight training out of pocket, OR you go to MTSU and use student loans to help pay for both flight training AND ground school. Personally, I'd like the fact that my flight training is going towards a degree. :rawk:

I'm also looking into Auburn's Program. As for the ground school portion that was mentioned above. I don't think that is true. I know for a fact that Auburn has 11 Cessna 172's, two Cessna 172RG's, one Beech Duchess, a Citation Ultra and a Citation Bravo. With that said, I'm pretty sure they do their own flying towards the degree. Maybe someone that is a Auburn student/alum can fill us in...

I stand corrected....yes AU does do flight training, and I never knew that. However, I'm not 100% sure what's up with how they use it towards a degree. I would say to call the Aviation or Aerospace Dept and ask.

Cost depends on each semester--some may cost more, some cost less. However, you can look to spend about $4k to $6k, depending on fuel costs, which means you could pay anywhere from $100 to $160 an hour for single engine planes, maybe double that for mutli-engine planes. I know it sounds like a lot, but there is really no way of getting out of it anywhere you go. BUT, there is hope with federal student loans. That way you can pay it back after graduation when you may have a job.

Both schools are great schools and have great programs! My recommendation is that you go to MTSU because they have brand new, better aircraft--DiamondStar20's and 40's (with Garmin G1000 glass cockpits, which is important to get experience in for maybe later professional flying), Piper Archers, and Piper Seminoles. However, AU does have a good football program......

I hope this helps! Good luck!

yah, i dont think flying goes towards your degree at auburn. i also hear that the mtsu football team is...well, really bad, but i am trying to keep my decision based on the flight program. are there any alumnis or students who can share their expeirences at either school, and what are the alumnis doing now?

Now lloyd, you know how important that foosball is down here in the dirty south!!

HAHA our foosball team (MTSU) is a joke lol but other than that our fleet is pretty cool all DA-40s, DA-20s,new Arrows, and Seminoles.

Flying at Auburn does count toward a degree. The best part about Auburn (other than we do have a good football team) is that you don't get a degree in just aviation. You will graduate with Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Aviation Flight Management. Auburn has wonderful curriculum and also has internships set up with many regional/major airlines aswell as corporate aviation internships which will help you to get a flight job.

Auburn is also one of my top choices for collegiate aviation programs. From my visit it seemed very professional and top notch department personnel. If any current or AU grads wanna give their insight that would be much appreciated.
