Moving to Maryland, next month, need help.

So I am finally leaving the sandbox, and moving to Maryland. All within a few short weeks. Now here's the thing, where in the heck do I live? Will be commuting to the Cockeysville area. Where are the good places to live, where are the cheap places to live? Anyone have a room to rent?

I will have to fly out of BWI often enough, but not often enough to live nearby.

Thank you for any input!

No place in MD that you'd want to live is cheap. Between taxes and house prices, you're gonna pay for a nice place to live. That said, it's a beautiful state overall. Wife and I have strongly considered moving out there for a while now.

Cockeysville is fairly far north...if you can live anywhere on the north side of B'more, it will probably save your sanity because traffic is fairly awful there depending on your commute time. Arundel Mills area is close to the airport, kinda suburban but nice, but the commute up to Cockeysville would kill ya.

Timonium, Hunt Valley and that whole area are all quite nice, but kinda spendy. I have a co-worker who lives in Phoenix, MD - very nice, very pretty, and kind of expensive - you're sort of at the border of horse farm country and high-end burbs there.

Sparks and Glencoe are nice, and not too far up from Cockeysville. Again, much of this is about traffic.

Now - if you don't mind urban living, there are some really cool places being built in and around Fells Point and the Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore. The advantage of that setup is your commute is reversed, so you should be able to pop up to Cockeysville fairly easily on I-83 in the mornings. You'll pay for the convenience of downtown living, but B'more is a pretty cool town. Like any major city, be smart about where you go and what you do.

I'll post more for you as I think of it....

I've heard of people going to York, PA to live before, any idea of that area?

Yeah - one of my other co-workers just moved from there to Australia - internal company transfer.

It's smaller and cheaper, likely, but I don't really know much about the area other than that there are some nice roads for motorcycling.

It would definitely be an easier commute, I would think, but I'm not sure about times or traffic.

I used to live in Lancaster, PA and York wasn't too far. If you're looking for fun things to do, York isn't the best place for it. However, if its just for convenience and such, its not a bad idea. It is basically taking I-83 South/North every time. But then again, rush hour going north can be brutal. York is cheaper, but its a boring town.

I can't really speak to Baltimore because I grew up and lived in Montgomery County. You want cheap? Montgomery is not it.

I know quite a few people who lived in Laurel to escape the higher prices of living in a suburb closer to DC. That also would be a shorter drive to BWI.

As for living in York, that's a LONG drive, man. I wouldn't want to do it.

Wondering if you might pop on undflyboy06, I might have to stop by depending on how I travel, not sure if fast or slow.
Happy to hear that you will be leaving the sandbox and spending more time back in the states.

I heard a lot of people do York due to cost, and it's little traffic. Honestly from what I see York is dated. I'd like a newer home, even if it's small. I'm tired of old wiring and old plumbing. What about the drive from APG area to the NW side? I know from Columbia to Cockeysville is a pain in the butt in the morning, how is it from the NE to the NW?

You talking about Abingdon or Aberdeen?

They're nice places. No major highway going to Cockeysville, though - it'll be 2-lane state roads. That's good when they're clear and very, very, very bad when there's a wreck. Or ice and snow.

Take a look at Bel-Air, though. Very nice places there. Newer.

I grew up in South Bel-Air/N Abingdon. It's certainly changed a lot since then (mostly just grown) but I had a great childhood. For the most part as long as you stay North of 95 you won't find anything too terrible. I haven't been around in a while but still have plenty of family and friends in the area. If you're ok with being a little more in the country you can find some decently priced houses in North Harford or Baltimore Counties. To give you an idea my parents sold the house I grew up in (4bd/4ba 1800 sq ft built in 1992) for $270,000 in Dec 2012. Prices have been creeping up still though so I would certainly expect to spend in the $300k for a decent family home.

Wow, that's amazingly inexpensive. In Montgomery, that would get you a condo. Maybe a town house if you lived in the sticks.

I guess I should've added that there wasn't much updating done. The roof was new and one side had new siding from a hail storm a few years back.... updated similar houses go for around 330-340 in the same neighborhood but yes the further you get to dc the prices shoot up. My parents worked a few miles SW of BWI and even back in '92 price was a huge factor in why they chose to live on the otherside of Baltimore.

Yeah, really looking at the York area. Anyone fly out of KHTV ? A few comments indicate grumbling. Looking for maybe some weekend work or something fun to fly. Sport aircraft or a SR20 or 22. Any ideas for the area?

There are both light sports and an SR-20 that I know of - Fleming Aviation has the LSAs and the SR-20 is out of Washington International Flight Academy, both in GAI. There is an SR-20 for rental at JYO (pretty far trek) as well.

The LSAs are going to be WAY cheaper, but not cheaper than finding a beater 172.

I do know of a Socata Tobago out of Tipton that has some reasonable rates.

Good finds, I should mention I work North Baltimore and it looks like live in York, so way closer to PHL and Lancaster. Good finds though, might stop down to GAI at some point. Thank You!
