Morgan Freeman grounded.

[ QUOTE ]
Well, he was found 'Not guilty' by a jury of his peers....

[/ QUOTE ]
This is a different rant, but...

peer (pîr) n. A person who has equal standing with another or others, as in rank, class, or age.

So all 12 of those people had equal standing with OJ?

Riiiight.

Like I said different rant.

[ QUOTE ]
Maybe it was simply a poor choice of words, but again nowhere does he say, "I simply made a mistake". His comments make him come off that he's not responsible for what happened and that his grounding is unfair and/or unjustified.

[/ QUOTE ]And nowhere does he say that it wasn't his fault. The quotation you presented reads to me like nothing more than a factual explanation of what happened, most likely in response to a request from a reporter to describe what happened. You are reading things into his statement that simply aren't there.

But you do bring up a good question!!

If O.G. Pimp Mack Daddy from the 43rd Street Gangstas decides to cap a 14 year-old for stealing his weed, and his jury is made up of the likes of you and I, would that be an unfair trial as well?

Again, different rant...but since you asked.

Just to qualify I'm using a very strict interpretation of the word peer in this argument.

Yes. It would be an unfair trial. I am not of the same class as O.G. PMD.

At the very least the jury should be made up of people his age.

The way I see it the "jury of your peers" was designed for a time where everyone in a town knew everyone else. It was for a time where if John Smith was accused of murder and he claimed it was a crime of passion after catching his wife in bed with his best friend, his peers would not only consider the facts of the crime, but when it came to punishment his character as well.

So should O.G. PMD have 12 of his gang mates in the jury box? If they are his equals then sure, assuming they are not known or avowed criminals themselves.

Interestingly enough I would probably be the type of juror he would want. I've made mistakes in my life and will give kids the benefit of the doubt that perhaps they'll learn from all this. I mean I didn't press charges against the 17 year old punks who stole my car, because A) they were being prosecuted for other things and B) I know that at 17 people can really turn their lives around and a felony conviction for GTA can really f up your world.

Where as a person O.G. PMD's age (assuming he's a 18-20 something) is more likely to lack the tempering that age gives you and send him up river lickity split...no sh*t.

Has anyone else noticed that the celebs who are active in aviation are some of the better types.

Travolta, Cruise, Quaid, Freeman, Michael Dorn (Lt. Worf), that's all I can think of offhand. Oh yeah, Swayze, don't know about him.

First of all aviation people are good people in general and secondly it's consistent with staying off of drugs.

Morgan Freeman doesn't live in Oxford, MS.

He lives in Clarksdale, MS. He owns an awesome blues club called Ground Zero. He also owns a very nice French restaurant, also in Clarksdale.

He and his business partner, Bill Luckett, are avid aviators. Everyone in North Mississippi knows it. I've even heard him on the radio.

I believe they now own a C-441.

I've met the guy on a few occassions at his blues club. He is one of the most down to earth "celebrities" I have ever met.

This thread is stupid. Since when did we start believing the ignorant media about flying related incidents. It sounds like Naunga wants to shoot first and ask questions later.

So I got to thinking about this last night, and it occurred to me that being grounded by the FAA sounded a bit extreme for screwing up a clearance.

I mean isn't that usually just a severe tongue lashing from the tower chief and that's it?

Seems to me like there might be more to this story than just a busting an altitude.

Again I'm not trying to villify the guy, but the punishment doesn't seem to fit the apparent crime.

Could be wrong.

Sounds like perhaps, but not what I was doing.

The problem with your comment is that the information regarding the incident were direct quotes from Freeman himself.

As I said my beef wasn't with Freeman so much as it was the overall attitude that celebs hold that they are entitled to special treatment and don't feel that they need to participate in society with the rest of us.

And you know this how? Do you think those quotes were the totality of his comments? Do you think the reporter could have confused more than just censor and censure?

Well how do you address people you have a beef with? Cause this sounds like a beef with Freeman: "Anyhow. To Morgan Freeman I say, "F you man! I hope the FAA keeps your entitlement-minded arse on the ground permanently, because if you can't take responsibility for your own actions, you're a danger to the rest of us."

I like the fact that they call him the Driving Miss Daisy star, which compared to Glory or Shawshank Redemption was poop.

Liked DMD. Also Nurse Betty. But Hoke was a great role and he should have gotten an oscar for his performance.

This kind of feel good feelings, when it comes to juror thinking, is exactly the reason the kids get away with this crime and the kids know it. "Throw the book at em Danno" The kids must learn "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time" If you are a victim of a crime and it costs you $$, you will change your thinking.

. . .but when I bust a reg and end up on the 6 o'clock news you'll hear the following from me: "I made a mistake".

Not me. The FAA has to prove that I messed up before I admit to anything....

I was victim of crime. They stole my car, and it did cost me money.

But, having been young myself and making my share of mistakes I felt it was overkill to add a felony conviction to the kids' lives in light of the fact that they were being prosecuted for a multitude of other things.

Perhaps they'll learn, perhaps not.

Not picking on you av8rmsu, but I believe there was a mutual agreement between everyone that it was time to take down all the political banners such as the one below that appears in your avtar:

Election is over. Let's move on.

Pretty serious blanket statements about celebrities, there! I'm sure there are other folks out there who heard the story saying, "Man, those stinkin' pilots who think they can just bust the rules." Or thinking that ALL pilots drink before they fly because of one stupid airline captain. Or thinking that all Californians are surfers who live on the beach. Or . . . well . . . you get the point.

For every celebrity you mentioned who did something to piss you off, I'll bet there are 5 who have done productive, generous, non-intrusive things to help people or society.

Take it from me. I *never* get pissed off or make assumptions about people. Really . . .
