....more PHX questions

And Maximillian, I follow the weather in cities in the south also, but I use DUAT instead of paying for a long distance phone call. Those of you who live in the south probably don't follow the weather somewhere else because you don't aspire to live somewhere else.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well it doesn't cost me a thing to call other cities to listen to there ATIS. I have flat rate long distance on the landline and free nationwide calling on the cell.

Trust me tho if I had to pay for it I wouldn't call 5 times a day or even at all

And as for Van Buren st. that is the "red light district" in PHX. where all the crack "women" hang out. Prolly not a good place to be at night.

Hey, Russ...you're finally outta there!!!!

[/ QUOTE ]Let's not put the cart before the horse, Lloyd ... I still have to get through the interview! But yes, I am getting rather excited at the notion of leaving this backwater behind!! The only thing I'd miss would be Bojangles ... but I still have family in Charlotte and can get it there when I visit.

Nashville would be (to me anyway) a great place to live. You, on the other hand, have this twisted love affair with San Francisco!! (Hey, a great city, one I love to visit, but I could NEVER live there!)

Mmmmmm - Bojangles!!! I'm headed to TN this weekend for vacation (camping in Gatlinburg) - I swear to BOB, if I see one of those highway signs with a Bojangles logo on it, I'm pulling off!

Mmmmm....Bojangles!!!! That makes me want to drive on up to Clarksville!!!

As far as San Francisco, I don't think I'll be going back. San Fran will always be my home, but I don't think that I could get back into the whole $400,000 for 1400 square feet thing....

Okay I continue to have no life.

PHX ATIS as of 0256Z on Tues. March 23rd.

Information ROMEO current.

Wind is 090/04kts. and the airport is using westerly traffic.

Which is rwy. 26,25L & 25R.

Instead of rwy. 08 or 07L or 07R.

And they continued using westerly traffic until sometime after 11pm there local time.

If the winds were outa the east (090) at 04 knots why wasn't traffic taking off to the east using rwys. 08,07R, 07L.

Someone please help me out.

And while your at it help me find an ATIS anyomous group.

I'm ready for a 12 step program.

If the wind was only 4 kts, they may use the other rw's for noise abatement or something. They just may be the preferred rw's at night. I have shot the GPS36 approach at my apt and landed on 36 eventhough the active rw in ATIS was 28l/r. If the wind is little or none, they will allow you the choice.

Runway use programs, noise abatement, etc can also dictate runway in use. When the wind is less than five knots in any direction, typically an airport will use its preferred "calm wind" configuration. A tailwind of less than five knots is usually not a big deal.

[/ QUOTE ]I think it's pretty much for noise abatement reasons. Sky Harbor is in Phx, just across the (dry) river from Tempe. For some reason, Tempe (which is just southeast of the 25 end of rwy 25L, across the river) generates much more noise complaints than the area of Phx located at the 7 end of the runways. The 7 side is mostly commercial development; most of the rental car parking lots are there.
I believe Phoenix has also been more aggressive about installing sound insulation on older homes just west of the airport than Tempe has been. I saw something a couple years ago on the city's (Phoenix's) cable channel about their whole "sound insulation in the barrio" program.
Anyway, Tempe has sued Phoenix over the airport (I think specifically over its noise, but I could be wrong): "Airplanes from Sky Harbor have been a key concern for years in Tempe, and Tempe has three lawsuits relating to airport issues still in the courts. Two are against the FAA, one is against the FAA and Phoenix." (Full article) When I attended ASU a few years ago, there were some older buildings in which planes were easily audible; they were distracting when we were taking tests. Also, Tempe is trying to attract high-rise development along its new Town Lake (which wasn't cheap to build). This development would be directly under flight paths.
I think west departures have become so much more preferable to east departures that if the wind isn't doing much, they'll just send 'em to the west.
Remember too, that there's lingering bitterness in Tempe's city gov't over the new Cardinals football stadium, which was to be built under the centerline of rwy 8 in far north Tempe. It's considered (rightly or wrongly) the FAA's "fault" that the stadium is now being built in Glendale, far to the northwest.

Don't forget when Tempe wanted to build a football stadium right off the end of the runways. I like when ALPA calculated that a full loaded 737 would only clear to top of the stadium by 120' if an engine was lost on rotation.

Early someone wrote that they see airplanes rotating near the end of the runway. This most likely due to reduced thrust takeoffs. At my company we takeoff with the lowest allowed power setting, thus using the maximum amount of runway and saving wear on the motors. If we were to take off from the longer runway we would just use less power and still rotate way down the strip.

Ok, I have a question about PHX....I hear helicopters all the time on the tower frequency to request transition through the airspace. It would go something like this:
Helicopter: Phoenix Tower, Native 3 request clearence transition Bravo via Sharp-Delta
Tower:Native 3, Squawk 0404, Ident Proceed via Sharp-Delta
Now My question is, what is Sharp-Delta?

*shrug* I'll be flying with a friend from Scottsdale to Casa Grande on Thursday, and we'll be crossing PHX's class B space. If nobody's answered your ? by then, I'll ask him on Thursday.
