I friended him on facebook. He's local. I think the gofundme was a bad idea. Otherwise, I think he paid his debt to society. (is paying it if you consider probation). He seems like a nice kid. You could look at some ALPA transgressions that have come back and make that case the kid deserves a chance. He needs to make it happen on his own, though. No favors.

It'd be a more believable story if the headline was, "Barefoot Bandit out of jail, decides to turn life around by learning to fly by the rules," and he was funding the venture through his own hard work. Anything else seema like a quick money grab.
 
My first thought was, "if he wasn't supposed to profit from his story, what does he call the proceeds from the GoFundMe page that are intended for flight training USING his 'rising phoenix' story?"
