Doesn't sound good...

He was a friend of our company owner. Rented his T-hangar from us. Early 40's, wife is a physician, couple of young kids.

:(

Sorry to hear, Steve.

Just out of curiosity, how much better does a high performance Mooney perform at 250 vs 12K? In the mid 80's I used to fly a 201 and it would run out of breath up above 10 or so.

I fly a 201 one also and wouldn't even think about this. However it is super sad for the family he left behind. Lets all learn from this to honor our fallen aviator.

If it was the turbocharged version, I'd imagine quite a lot.

You can gain 30 KTAS by going up high with a turbocharged engine. Factor in better tailwinds up high and you might increase your groundspeed by 50-60 knots.

Steve,
Do you happen to know if this Mooney was blue and white? I think I met this guy about two weeks ago over at Sparta.
