Has anyone heard much about this island hopper out of Hawaii? I have been on their website, but can't seem to find anywhere to apply or submit a resume.

They are 135 so they hire low time (<300 hour) FOs. The pay (for FOs) is pretty abysmal, but they seem to be upgrading guys once they hit their 1200 hours for 135 PIC. They fly the guys pretty hard, but the planes seem like they are in good shape and the routes (other than the fact that a lot of legs are over water *maybe* within engine out glide distance of land... at night) are very scenic.

The downside for me is that they are like gnats when we are trying to get in to Kona or Maui and HCF can't separate traffic worth a damn some times so it can get kind of sporting dodging them.

Get high, get fast.

Tough to do while landing.
Except as required for takeoff and landing.

Luckily the FAA figured out murphy hops out and physics don't apply during takeoff and landing. Because cruise is the most common time to have a serious problem. Yup.

I tried to go to work for them 7 years ago with 1000hrs. Sold my stuff, moved to Kona and spent a month waiting to see if they'd train me. They did one or two flights, but we never did indoc, or anything else. After a month of this, I was completely broke, I went down to talk about this with the management types about this, they said, "if you're broke, you can wash airplanes or take a loan out from the company." I found a job back in Alaska and went home.

I'm sure the timing was bad - as I guess they didn't have people who could do it, but why the heck did they ask me to quit my job and fly out to Kona then? I was very upset, and I didn't exactly handle it well when they told me a could take a loan out from the company; I was angry and sad all at the same time and I burned that bridge so hard people won't be able to walk over it for 1000 years, not my greatest moment :(. It was a rude awakening to the world of aviation that I'd largely been insulated from in Alaska. I'm still fairly embarrassed about I handled it, when I was on vacation in hawaii a year later, I went in to apologize, but nobody who was there at the time still worked there, so if you remember an angry 19 year old me, and you happen to be on jetcareers - I am sorry - consider this my public apology. The economic consequences of going and trying to make it there took me two years to pay off, but it was a worthwhile experience, and I'm now moving back to Hawaii (though to Kauai this time) with my family in October.

That said, I've talked to other people who had an absolutely excellent experience there, and I truly believe that my experience was due to bad timing and growing pains of the company rather than intentional malice - but it didn't appear that way at the time. I've heard that if you're picking between Mokulele and Pacific Wings, pick Mokulele.

Good place to learn the world of 135 pax hauling. Nice airplanes, you usually do either the morning or afternoon/evening shift. Lots of movement/upgrading now. Nice people. Great views. Go for it!

Thanks for the info! Does anybody know how you go about applying for them? There is nothing that I can find on their website.

So, you are saying that you are hoping that their management types don't take jobs as pilot recruiters at Delta or some other major you are hoping to get on with.

We need deets on your encounter. Did you rage quit or what? It would make a good learning moment for some here on what, or what not, to do.

Not really, if they are the ones that prevent me from getting on someplace, then that can only be fitting. I actually genuinely feel bad about how I spoke to people, career aside. I was mad at the guy who offered me the job and told me "get out here quick, we need people" for several years, but it was unnecessary, I'm certain it wasn't a bait-and-switch thing to get me out there then get me in debt to the company, it was just growing pains. I was a cocky • (this comes with being 19 years old), and didn't handle the whole situation well after I got a new job offer.
